That lake scene in Zodiac is a doozy. I think it's the combo of the act taking place in broad daylight and the extremely calm nature of the killer. It's weird how sometimes what's not shown can be more disturbing that what is. In that London to Brighton film I mentioned above you really don't see much but I think that actually made it MORE disturbing than if you did! I went to UC Davis and so had hung out at Lake Berryessa many times, including time spent canoodling in the grass with boys. Made that scene so much more creepy!

I thought the lake scene in Zodiac were more disturbing than anything in Seven. Oh also the scene where the killer says he is going to throw the baby out of the car. Freaky.
I don't know why I thought it would be a good idea to watch the remake of I Spit On Your Grave. I only made it about halfway through. Once the fishhook came out I turned it off. I can take disturbing stuff if there is a purpose to it but this movie was just completely exploitative and meaningless.

Ok, I clearly need to rewatch Zodiac. I don't remember any of these scenes!

Pretty much the entire length of "Martyrs" is cruel, bloody, violent, brutal and disturbing. Certainly a film to endure, not enjoy. It's far twistier than you'd expect from what appears at first to be French torture porn, and by the end has some curiously intellectual things to say about Catholicism.

I watched Martyrs this weekend too. I would say it is up there with Audition in level of disturbing moments. It is definitely not enjoyable but I think it did what it wanted to do very effectively. I would put it on the list of movies that I admire but never want to see again (along with Requiem for a Dream and Irreversible). Also not to sound like a total sicko but I actually thought the last shot had a certain beauty. It reminded me of a [white] drawing from an old medical textbook [/white]. The scene with the helmet on the other hand was just plain horrifying.

A day later and I'd hafta say "admire" would be the way I feel about "Martyrs", too. It's so hard to talk about it without spoiling -- and if you dare to see it, it's really best to know zilch going in (except that it's one of the most brutal film exercises ever) -- but I have to hand it to the director. He makes every serial killer who snuffs out lives just to watch their eyes go dead seem like a dilletante.

Please add my old boss to this list. I still remember not having anything to do one particular weekend and he and his wife could not recommend one movie highly enough for me to go and see. "If you want to see a really interesting movie.... (and who doesn't?) go this weekend to see The Crying Game." Don't like those types of jolts thank you. I remember the scene "happening" and the woman behind me gasping in surprise and me thinking, "I am in the wrong movie theater." (it was a small one that I had never previously attended) yes America, I was one of the ones who didn't know or suspect.

This isn't that disturbing, but I caught part of Knocked Up today, and although I'd seen it before, the use of B-52's Rock Lobster was kind of WTF. It made me look at the movie in a slightly different way.

When you think about all of the disturbing moments in The Exorcist, it's kind of silly that the one I find most disturbing is when Regan pees on the carpet at the party. Something about that scene just freaks the heck out of me.

The scene in Winter's Bone in which Jennifer Lawrence's character has to, um, get her father's hands out of the water was hella disturbing. So was the rest of the film, actually.
