Sigh, how could I have forgotten Guinastasia. Helen Hunt winning for AGAIG is one of the biggest travesties in the history of cinema. She gave a minimal performance is a supremely crappy movie. I will never, ever understood how people like that piece of crap. I hold a bitter resentment toward her because of that, but luckily she has all but fallen off the face of the earth...

I didn't like that film either though greg Kinner was great in it. Does Kate winslet have any strong films coming out with a chance at another nomination? She's way past due with four nods already, though I don't think she should have been nominated for Titanic.

Kate has Romance & Cigarettes & All the King's Men slated for this year. I'm thinking that she's doing supporting work in those though.
Still if it's a weak year and The Libertine is well received, maybe Johnny and Kate can both get some kind of statue.

Kate will also be in Todd Field's Little Children but I think that one will be released in 2006. She will get her deserved Oscar one day. But I'm sure it'll be one for supporting. Oh, and I agree with the comments on Helen Hunt and AGAIG. Greg Kinnear was the only good one in this crappy film and he didn't win (he was nominated, no?)!! Also, they gave "The Pianist" Oscars for actor, screenplay and director but gave freaking Chicago the one for Best Film?

After having seen Vera Drake, there's no question in my mind that Imelda Staunton was robbed. Hillary Swank rode to a win on the film, not her performance.

And I know the movie 'Breaking the Waves' was controversial and I do love Frances McDormand, but I think Emily Watson was robbed that year. McDormand won for Fargo (which IMO is overrated), but all these years later I can still remember how devestating Watson's role was. I agree completely. I love McDormand also, but few performances have left me as shell-shocked as what Emily Watson did in Breaking the Waves. I would even be happy if they'd given her the make-up Oscar for Hilary and Jackie, but they didn't do that either, instead they gave it to Pepto Bismol Paltrow. Also, Angelina Jolie needs to hand her Oscar to either Samantha Morton for Sweet and Lowdown or Chloe Sevigny for Boys Don't Cry.

I present to you:
Ralph Fiennes for Schindler's List, losing to Tommy Lee Jones for The Fugitive.
Thread over.

Tommy Lee Jones was great in The Fugitive. Look at the slate of nominees that year. All good. Fiennes was virtually unknown. He was great, but Jones crowned his career. Oscars aren't a merit contest.

Tommy Lee Jones was alright in The Fugitive. But let's face it, he shouldn't even have won the Oscar for his best role, Coal Miner's Daughter. So it's not like he was Jack Lemmon, with a huge long career of fantastic roles behind him.
And whether or not Ralph was an unknown shouldn't matter. It does, but this is the Should Have... thread. Where we post about how it should be a merit contest.

Fine, but I'm not convinced Ralph Fiennes gave the best perfromance of that slate of nominees. YMMV, of course. If we're talking about Should'ves, the conversation ender could be Martin Scorsese losing to Kevin Costner in 1990. But even that made Oscar sense. Or Waking Life not even getting a Best Animated Feature nomination.
