To anyone besides Ben and Matt. I want to meet the script doctors that made the Joan River's type of surgery on that script. Going back aways with this reply, but could not resist. That person would be one William Goldman.

I'd say that Tommy Lee Jones and Ralph Fiennes were a dead heat. I'd be fine if either of them won.
Out of Afica beating The Color Purple was ludicrous. Years ago, I worked in a video store a few months after both those movies were released on VHS. We'd rent Purple 20 times for every 1 Africa rental. Purple often got returned late. We got so sick of people complaining when they returned Africa ("this piece of crap won an Oscar?!") that the manager joked that he'd slap a disclaimer sticker on the box.

I present to you: Ralph Fiennes for Schindler's List, losing to Tommy Lee Jones for The Fugitive. Thread over. I'ver been wanting to respond to this post forever. I 100% agree with this. No, make that 150%! Oh, and my new contribution....Brokeback over Trash for Best Picture!!!!!![/still fuming]

Urgh, yes all the way. I cannot believe "Crash" won. It was like an after school special...but worse.
Heck, I actually live in LA and please. All of the issues discussed in the film have been done before. And most importantly, it was actually done BETTER the first time around.
I wish Brokeback would've taken it. However, yay for Ang Lee though.

What's even worse to me is that Crash took home the Original Screenplay award over Good Night, And Good Luck or The Squid And The Whale .... just no. Usually the Screenplay awards are an indicator for what the Academy actually believes to be the best movie, so the fact that they gave it to Crash shows to me that they not merely went for the least controversial Best Picture nom, no, they genuinely thought Crash to be a grand film

I was stunned that Crash actually won. Granted, Brokeback Mountain was a flawed film in some respects, but Crash was nowhere near its level in acting, directing, cinematography and script. I think this was the Academy's way of rebelling against the hype surrounding Brokeback. They definitely got it wrong.

Agreed, BFM. Then again, I'm still horrified that The New World didn't get nominated for a whole bunch of things (and lost in cinematography!!) -- especially Q'Orianka Kilcher's amazing performance. Foo.

Brokeback. What a slap in the face. It was the Academy played a cruel joke.

Brokeback. What a slap in the face. It was the Academy played a cruel joke. So true. After 3 hours of self-congratulations about how liberal Hollywood is, fighting prejudice and injustice, they end up revealing themselves for the true hypocritical limousine liberals they are.

I wouldn't have such a big problem with Brokeback Mountain losing if it had lost to Capote, Good Night and Good Luck, or Munich. I saw Capote and GNaGL and they were excellent films. I didn't see Munich but it's a Spielberg Serious Issue movie so that would've been understandable.
About the only thing giving me comfort is that someday everyone will realize what a huge mistake it was giving it to Crash. And like someone in the Oscars thread said, they get Best Picture wrong more often than they do any other category.
