I had to post this thread, because I just stumbled across the infamous Rob Lowe and Snow White duet of Proud Mary. I've heard about how bad it was for years, but watching it now, I am just bemused by how random and weird it is. And doing a complete 180, Errol Morris' short from a few years back with various people talking about why they love movies. I can't say I'm thrilled with the way it closes with the woman getting sobbing over It's a Wonderful Life but I especially like the two NYC cops: "... but, I like Harvey Keitel". Her partner's pause speaks volumes. ;D Anyother Oscar moments of note or notoriety?

Yaaay! Great thread! My all-time favorite Oscar joke was at the 1993 AA when The Crying Game was up for all sorts of awards, and Stephen Rea was up for Best Actor. This was also the same year that White Men Can't Jump was released. Billy Crystal was up on the stage at the beginning of the show, doing his jokes, and he says, "Tonight we're honoring Stephen Rea, for proving to us that white man CAN jump" I died - it's still the funniest thing I've heard on the Oscars!

My favorite moment was in 2001 when Tom Hanks and Russell Crowe were both nominated for Best Actor. Steve Martin was hosting and during his monologue he mentioned that the FBI had uncovered a plot to kidnap Russell Crowe, and he said "Tom Hanks you should be ashamed of yourself." The camera cut to Hanks who had the funniest "guilty" expression on his face. Meanwhile Crowe was just glowering as he always does.
I just love it when the celebrities play along with the host's jokes like that. It was awesome.

Ugh, that was the same year we were subjected to Halle Berry's "this moment is so much bigger than me!" speech. I was watching the Oscars with my mom and my sister, and we're all Black so you would think that when they called her name, we would've all like jumped up and cried and cheered or something. We didn't. We just kind of gave each other WTF looks. None of us had even seen Monster's Ball, but we've seen Halle Berry act, so we were suspect of this historical moment. I caught it later on that year and was appalled by the sheer badness of it. What KILLED me about that night was that Halle thanked everybody from Hattie McDaniel to Vivica Fox (I kid you not!), but failed to thank Whoopi Goldberg - and Whoopi was HOSTING the damned ceremony!

I love that too. It keeps things in perspective. I remember a bit where the Steve Martin (during his second time hosting) was talking about all of the movie stars he had slept with and then the camera cut to people like Halle Berry, Renee Zellweger and ERNEST BORGNINE. That alone was pretty funny but Borgnine did this little smile and wave and made it hilarious.
I also remember Martin making some pretty lame joke about Jennifer Lopez and wardrobe malfunctions (or double sided tape or something) and it cut to Bennifer Part 1 in the audience and Ben just looked at JLo and shook his head like "Lame!". It sounds like he was being a jerk but it was actually pretty funny and made the joke even funnier.

I think that the whole 2005 ceremony was just one bad Oscar moment. Gathering nominees on stage and having the winner come forward like an idiot? Handing out awards in the aisle to the tech, docu and short film people? Letting freaking Beyonce perform three songs she had nothing to do with (ahd totally butchered)? Argh. It was just so so bad. Oh, and Chris Rock hosting was also not exactly a highlight. Why did the guy have to be so fucking shrill all the time and say "okay!" after every joke? Then again, most hosts suck. And Billy Chrystal is so totally overrated. Anyway, the only thing I liked about last year was the for some reason totally hilarious Jeremy Irons. Completely underrated comedian that man.
Oh, and every time they let Fishstick Paltrow come onto that stage is just bad.

I think after he mentioned all the young, hot actresses, he also mentioned Julie Andrews ( who is gorgeous, but is so totally classy she doesn't seem to fit in with the list any better than Ernest Borgnine, who I think came right after her!). She did something hilarious, like winked and gave a thumbs up - I don't remember exactly, but I do recall she completely played along with it.

The old school actors are so much less uptight about themselves and their images.
Not a funny moment but I can still remember the 2000 Oscars when Cate Blanchett and Jude Law presented an award. He was still gorgeous at the time and she wore that slinky black dress with the Indian gold armlet thingy. It was like staring into the sun - too much pretty.
