My favorite moment was in 2001 when Tom Hanks and Russell Crowe were both nominated for Best Actor. Steve Martin was hosting and during his monologue he mentioned that the FBI had uncovered a plot to kidnap Russell Crowe, and he said "Tom Hanks you should be ashamed of yourself." The camera cut to Hanks who had the funniest "guilty" expression on his face. Meanwhile Crowe was just glowering as he always does. I just love it when the celebrities play along with the host's jokes like that. It was awesome. Whoa, wasn't it revealed there was some death threat against him and he had to have high security that night? I probably wouldn't be too happy about that either.

I think that was the whole point of the joke. There was some news flying about that someone wanted to kidnap Russell Crowe.

Ugh, that was the same year we were subjected to Halle Berry's "this moment is so much bigger than me!" speech. I was watching the Oscars with my mom and my sister, and we're all Black so you would think that when they called her name, we would've all like jumped up and cried and cheered or something. We didn't. We just kind of gave each other WTF looks. None of us had even seen Monster's Ball, but we've seen Halle Berry act, so we were suspect of this historical moment. I caught it later on that year and was appalled by the sheer badness of it. What KILLED me about that night was that Halle thanked everybody from Hattie McDaniel to Vivica Fox (I kid you not!), but failed to thank Whoopi Goldberg - and Whoopi was HOSTING the damned ceremony! Yeah, the speech was way over the top, but Adrian Brody pulling out the breathe spray in anticipation of kissing Halle? Classic.

I thought Adrien's breath spray moment was the year after he won (and he won the year after Halle won) to spoof his infamous kiss with Halle. I know a lot of people were bothered by the whole breath spray thing because he made the moment all about him, the presenter, rather than the winner, but I thought it was cute and funny. I also thought it was hilarious and endearing (yeah, I suck) when he grabbed Halle Berry and kissed her after his surprise win. That kiss was such a spontaneous (and, sort of creepy) moment - his win was such a surprise and the kiss was like this big extension of the WTF-ness of the situation for me.

I always have to giggle when I think of the year Paul Hogan, introducing some segment, discussed the "three G's" of accepting an award: "Be gracious, be grateful, get off." In that accent, it was hilarious.

Also, anything that affects Halle Berry adversely is good enough for me.

One of my most memorable Oscar Moments was when Billy Bush from Access Hollywood took Keisha Castle-Hughes over to meet Johnny Depp, about 45 seconds before the start of the show when they were supposed to be in their seats. Keisha had a huge crush on Johnny and looked like she was about to wet her pants (er, dress) on national television. Johnny was incredibly gracious to her, but I wanted to smack Billy Bush for making her do that on TV.

A favorite Oscar moment is when Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson did a sketch for best costume design, and did their schtick. Ben Stiller dressed up as Gimli and Owen Wilson was Harry Potter I think. The best moment for me is Will Ferrell and Jack Black singing the get off the stage song. "Del Taco...."

I was grateful that JD handled it well, but I could have screamed at that ridiculous Billy Bush for putting that poor kid in such a pressure situation! If I recall, Bush was being pretty much insufferble during his whole pre-show schtick. Some audience members weren't bothering to hide their contempt. One actress (I can't remember who) even made a snide remark to him, right on camera.

That was Sandra Bullock, after Billy Bush practically pushed Alec Baldwin down in his seat in order to speak to Keshia.
Idiocy runs in that family.
Anna Paquin's hyperventilating reaction to winning for The Piano was impressive, but unfortunate, since I had just announced to the entire party that the Academy was NEVER going to give the Oscar to a kid.
There's a DVD available called "Oscar's Greatest Moments: 1970 - 1990" which has a lot of scenes we all remember from the show.
