When I first saw "The Sixth Sense," I didn't know anything about it, so I wasn't expecting a twist ending. I personally was glad everything worked out okay with the kid and his mom, and I thought that would be the end of it. I was wrong.
I think that's why none of M. Night Shamalan (or whatever)'s have been as good. Everyone's waiting for the twist.
Also, the singing and dancing at the end of "The 40-Year-Old Virgin." Priceless.

Susyhomewrecker, you chose two of my favorites! Between that and your bitchin' avatar, I'd say you are top notch. Seriously, I haven't been left with my jaw on the floor with a movie ending the way I was with The Sixth Sense. I was totally sucked in. I never suspected anything. I get absorbed into movies fairly easily, so it isn't difficult to "get" me with things like that, but when that ring fell to the floor and Bruce Willis looked at his hand and it all made sense, I was so blown away. I haven't liked anything else by M. Night Shyamalan since.

Totally agree on The Sixth Sense. I saw it when it first came out and really didn't know anything about it except that it was a scary movie. As soon as the wedding ring hit the floor I was going "holy shit!!!"
The ending of The Empire Strikes Back shocked me. Somehow I managed to make it to the age of 15 without knowing that the Star Wars movies existed. We rented them on VHS after a trip to Disneyland and riding Star Tours (which I thought was some just self contained storyline). I remember as soon as the credits came up my brother and I started screaming and couldn't shove the next tape into the VCR fast enough.

So mine isn't really a "great ending," per se, but it still gives me butterflies in the tummy. Sixteen Candles, when Samantha sees Jake standing and waiting for her. The music, the nervousness, the "oh my God, she's getting the guy!" and the "Yeah, you..." of it all. I liked it when I was younger, and I still think it's one of the most romantic moments I've seen in movies.
Yeah. I'm cheesy like that.

I liked the ending of Hero. It's only by then you know what the whole thing was about.
Also Life is Beautiful, even though it's tragic.
In both of those movies the ending is happy and sad at the same time.

Margo -- I know! In Thelma and Louise the ending seems so shocking even though in retrospect you realize there couldn't have been any other ending that made sense, given what had gone on before. Somehow, a happy ending would have been a sell-out.
Can I brag about my first viewing of The Sixth Sense? I predicted the ending! Yes! Normally I'm easily manipulated by movies. If I'm meant to cry, I cry. If I'm meant to be scared, I'm scared. If I'm meant to be shocked, I'm shocked. But for some reason, with that movie, right off the bat (and I didn't know anything beforehand) I said to my boyfriend "I'll bet Bruce Willis is dead!" I have no idea what tipped me off. It was a fluke. It will probably never happen again, with any movie, in the entire history of me.

In both of those movies the ending is happy and sad at the same time. Oh my, the ending of Life is Beautiful made me cry. And still makes me cry every time I watch this movie. The little boy being all happy and saying "we won" over and over again when we as viewers know that his father was killed....gets me every time. The whole movie is so incredibly sad, I never got why people said it made fun of the Holocaust. It doesn't. Not for a single second.

Susyhomewrecker, you chose two of my favorites! Between that and your bitchin' avatar, I'd say you are top notch. Why thank you! Being a fellow Scrubs fan I think you're pretty nifty yourself. I just thought of another one I love: "When Harry Met Sally." I love the part when Harry says, "When you decide you want to spend the rest of your life with someone, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible!" I probably butched that line, and I know it's cheesy and sappy, but it gets me. Every. Single. Time.

Kill Bill: Volume One. Thud. I have to wait *how* many months after this?
Because Catherine Deneuve just showed up on TV to remind me - Umbrellas of Cherbourg. I *want* it to end any other way, but I know it can't.
Out of Sight not only wins the sexy contest, but the great endings contest. J. Lo gives that Mona Lisa Smile and then the It's Your Thing riff starts and I'm smiling giddily.
The capper to Charade never ceases to amuse me either.
