After seeing Green Day's "shout out" to Queen's Live Aid performance on Saturday, I put in my Live Aid DVD and saw the real thing. Watching the whole Wembley crowd clap in unison to Radio Ga-Ga...man, that is magic.
Queen is the band who, when I listen to their music, it feels like I'm home. Even craptacular songs like the inane "Don't Stop Me Now," which I am currently listening to, have their place. I can put on a Queen CD (not Hot Space) and leave it play.
My obsession began in 1992 when Wayne's World came out. Queen set me down the road that led to Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd. It is also the band that made me realize that gay isn't "wrong," like small-town life had taught me. I realized that I liked Freddie, and he was obviously gay, so that must mean it was okay (I'm not gay, I'm just saying).
Feel free to continue...

Totally. That performance was one of the best things about Live Aid, and made me a Queen fan for life. Freddie's got one of the best voices ever. And I have a soft spot for Brian May, even though it seems like he'd play at a Port-a-Loo opening if it offered him enough cash.
Can you believe that there was a time in the 70s that most 'Merkin Rednecks didn't know Freddie was gay?

I love Queen! I think that they are/were (in Freddie's case ) exceptionally talented - and totally insane. Freddie had a fantastic voice. I was thrilled the other day to find that Tesco's had four Queen albums I don't have (lack of money, not lack of wanting) in their '3 for £16' section. So I bought 3, which boosts my Queen collection nicely. And I like "Don't Stop Me Now". It's such a fun song. Actually, I think that's partly why I like them - they always made it look like they were having fun with their music.

I flove Queen, and was so disappointed to see Green Day try to take on one of their songs at Live 8. I don't mind Green Day, but they just weren't the band to do it. Billy Joe was so out of his depth trying to do justice to Freddie, both in singing and in showmanship.
I'd always liked Queen, but really got into them in '90 with my college roommate. We'd sing Bohemian Rhapsody any chance we got. When Wayne's World came out, we got a huge laugh out of it, realized we were ahead of our time, so to speak. I love Queen II -- March of the Black Queen, Seven Seas of Rhye, etc.

"Save Me" is so heart-wrenching. LOVE me some Queen! In fact, I want the Chinese symbols for "killer" on one of my inner wrists and "queen" on the other.

I have both of the Greatest Hits video collections that came out in the early '90s. The video for "Good Old Fashioned Lover Boy" is ridiculous. Ha!!
My dad was less than impressed when me (and my two younger brothers) decided that Queen was OUR BAND, and gobbled up everything about them we could get our hands on. Remember that MTV documentary hosted by Axl Rose? I can't remember how many times I watched that. Then there was the Concert for Life, which my brother has now bought on DVD...I need to get my hands on that. I remember watching VH1 all day long, waiting to see and tape any Queen video they'd show, or catch replays of Queen: The Magic Years. I saw Highlander because of them.
I guess it's important because it was also the first band that I liked/got obsessed with because of their musicianship as opposed to a pretty face, or my friends' opinions. In fact, most of my friends thought I was insane. I recall my best friend's brother, upon hearing about my love of Queen, declaring, "THEY'RE GAY!" Of course this is in small-town Missouri no less, where gay is a crime. I was like, "Nope, just one." With a smile. I have since moved on to bigger and better cities...
