I nominate Madonna, playing a Brit, playing an American in "The Next Best Thing".
Ben Kingsley was in Harold and Maude? (!)

Yeah, Ben Kinglsey played a psychiatrist that Harold sees... he's supposed to be hamming it up in a memorable cameo, but he just comes off as Ben Kingsley fucking around in a bad accent. It's really jarring.

I actually thought Nicole had an alright accent in Far and Away. Tom's was pretty bad, though. But I still love that movie.

I nominate Madonna, playing a Brit, playing an American in "The Next Best Thing". I nominate Madonna, playing Madonna, in every other picture she's made. That made-up, pretentious accent of hers is too much to take.

Christian Slater in Basil. Once upon a time he could do a tolerable British accent. What the hell happened? That movie hurt me.

Holly Hunter's atrocious Boston accent in Once Around. Or maybe I should say Holly Huntah!

Oh yeah. The Rasta accent in Meet Joe Black. Awful because it was just a bad accent AND awful because the moment was supposed to be meaningful and it was hilarious! Oh man. Hilarious.
I think that sometimes I expect too much from actors I admire where accent work is concerned. Ewan and Emma Thompson are two of my all-time favorite actors and they just can't do credible American accents (I think Ewan is getting better - or I might have just stopped caring because of the hotness). They aren't truly awful like Portman in V for Vendetta but they don't sound authentic.
Charlize Theron had a terrible English accent on Arrested Development. I was really surprised because a lot of people I know from South Africa can do great British accents, but her accent was worse than what can be found in a high school production of Romeo and Juliet. Yikes.

Wasn't Charlize's accent terrible on purpose? I thought it was done on purpose because her character was a MRF.

I never really thought of that - mostly because the MRF thing was a surprise so they couldn't advertise it from the start, but even taking that into consideration I still thought her accent was awful.
