Yeah, what was up with that? I saw that movie when I was a kid, way before I actually knew of the acTOR Nic Cage. I really he just had a lisp or something in real life.

Word Secret Squirrel. I grew up in Duluth, MN. I have never heard someone speak in the "Minnesotan" accent used in Fargo and Drop Dead Gorgeous (I have not seen North Country yet). My hubby's great aunt from Wisconsin speaks like that. Okay, not as exaggerated. I don't know what that tells you.

I loved the way Nic Cage spoke in Peggy Sue Got Married. So random and over the top. Somehow it worked.

I love the movie Silence of the Lambs, but Jodie Foster's accent is terrible in it. It's jarring and it always pulls me out of the movie for a few minutes until I get used to it. I know quite a few people from West Va and that's NOT the right accent. Awful. (And I am a Jodie Foster fan!)

"Doctur Lecktur!" wasn't accurate? FWIW Julianne Moore's accent didn't seem quite right in Hannibal either.

That in those movies, they are trying to hard. ;D It's just over the top, that's what bothers me!

But the crazy accents really added to the awesomeness of Fargo. I loved those accents! I see how they would be annoying if you are from the area and people joke around and say "You betcha!" all the time, but within the world of the film, the accents are PERFECT. Admittedly, I am a huge fan of Fargo and wouldn't change a thing. It doesn't surprise me that the acccents were exaggerated, but within the context of the film, they work.
I feel the same about Nic Cage's accent in Con Air. It, admittedly, is worse than the accents in Fargo, but the whole movie is such a "wtf?!?" that Cage's crazy accent just works. Instead of pulling me out of the movie, it makes it more enjoyable!

Yeah, people from Fargo hate it. I mean, really. I used to go to school there and man...lol. Don't even try mentioning it to them now...I think it's wore out its welcome.

I saw an interview once where he said he had to do that movie in order to do another movie. He wasn't crazy about the script, so he got the director to agree to make the character slightly dorky with an adenoidal accent, I guess to spice things up or whatever.

That? Made me laugh out loud! I'm picturing the Italian waiter from Lady and the Tramp.
