Oh Jane, no. Her response to Sam Elliot's butthurt was so good, and then her comments on the Williams sisters was so shitty and unnecessary. This far into their careers and some people just STILL can't help being assholes about them. It reeks of second-wave white feminists (especially ones who are wealthy, Jane’s family is loaded): they acknowledge that it’s difficult to be a woman, but certainly don’t give a damn about what women of color have to go through and don’t acknowledge the importance of intersectionality. Her comments towards the Williams sisters was not only uncalled for, but inaccurate. Both Serena and Venus have competed against men! I know she will win Best Director this year since she just won the DGA (and being only the third woman to do so in 92 years!), but I’m definitely not happy about it, unless she apologizes for her dumb ass comment in her acceptance speech.

I haven’t really followed it, but I did see a tweet that she apologized.

She did, but she shouldn’t have said anything about the Williams sisters.

I don’t understand Jane Campion. How hard is it to stand up and say, “Thank you for this award,” and sit down? She had to have had some inkling that she might win. She should have prepared some innocuous remarks and left her casual racism against the Williams sisters out.

She did, but she shouldn’t have said anything about the Williams sisters. She was recognizing other women who were present at the event, and said very nice things, before tacking on the idiotic comparison. Here is the context of her comments, as quoted by the New York Times: And Campion's apology: When I heard the remark, I was reminded of Salma Hayek, at a Women in Hollywood luncheon, talking over Jessica Williams to insist that a Latina-Arab of her generation had it tougher than Jessica, or anyone of Jessica's generation. I don't understand anyone who feels the need to quantify oppression and turn it into a competition that they need to win.

Why is Jane asking Will Smith for tennis lessons? She really couldn’t focus on, I don’t know, the two tennis champions for tennis lessons?

Why is Jane asking Will Smith for tennis lessons? She really couldn’t focus on, I don’t know, the two tennis champions for tennis lessons? She was being flirty. It was supposed to be a lighthearted occasion.

OK. but really odd to ask for tennis lessons from the actor playing their father instead of the women who are the tennis champions. This whole speech just seems like an absolute train wreck, and I want her to apologize in her acceptance speech on Oscar night.

Bono’s Ukraine poem. Dear lord.... Can Bono not make everything in the world related to himself or Ireland? Experience the cringe!
