I read that it was going to be more of a Blackwater/mercenary-type scenario, but details are still pretty sketchy at this point. But still, Hollywood ain't got no business calling it 'Samurai'. Fucking none.

It was already remade as a western, "The Magnificent Seven", back in the '60s and that was a terrific movie. I could see how the story could be translated to a spy genre as well. Are they keeping the Seven Samurai title or is that just the working title? If they keep it, that could be confusing for audiences, but then again, that didn't hurt "Ronin".

I think Hairspray and The Women own this thread. I realize that the newer version of Hairspray may have its own constituency that has nothing to do with the John Waters one but the John Waters original is one of my faves of all time. The torching of The Women really broke my heart.
I feel like the appealing parts of the original are the sort of anachronistic things that really don't translate into a modernization - talking on your private extension in the bath, the glamour, Rosalind Russell's rat-a-tat dialogue, hearing gossip from your rich lady manicurist, your husband having an affair with the perfume counter girl (who really gets customer service anymore like that?), the trip to Reno and staying on a ranch for a quickie divorce. They don't make 'em like the young Joan Crawford, Rosalind Russell, etc. anymore. None of the modern chick-lit really kicks like Clare Booth Luce.

A friend told me this weekend that they were remaking the first Highlander movie and in looking for confirmation I see that Flash Gordon and Creature from the Black Lagoon are also getting remade. Also there's going to be another King Lear with Antony Hopkins, Keira Knightly and GOOPy.
I thought The Magnificient Seven was a good retelling of The Seven Samurai story so I can see another modern retelling... though I hope they don't use "Samurai" in the title.

The only way Highlander will be remade is if Adrian Paul is in the lead. No studio is gonna back him in a major motion picture, and since he owns the rights (unfortunately), no remake is gonna happen. At least, that's the opinion of the posters over at TrekBBS.

Looks like the Footloose remake is still on, they cast someone to replace Zac Efron. ETA: The only good thing that could come out of a Highlander remake is a more timeless soundtrack. The music in that movie is unintentionally hilarious.

Adrian Paul owns the rights to Highlander? Hunh. Interesting. He has to be getting up there in age though. TV Highlander was almost 20 years ago. He'd do best to hire a young unknown.
