No thread for this? Went and saw this with Boyfriend yesterday afternoon; as soon as he (and my brother for that matter) heard that there was going to be an ULTIMATE action movie with all of these guys in it (Stallone! Statham! Willis! Schwarzneggar! Li! LUNDGREN for God's sake; the only one missing was Van Damme...and Seagal) he was all over it. I resisted for awhile, then told him I'd trade him Expendables for Burlesque in the fall. This movie was hilariously stupid. One of the biggest dumbest action movies I've ever seen, totally over the top, but all in all a good time at the movies. I actually found Jason Statham kind of hot, which was surprising. Eric Roberts was the bad guy mastermind with Stone Cold Steve Austin at his side. HA. The body count is humongous. Did anyone else see this? ETA--Schwarzneggar and Willis were only cameos, basically, but I liked it. I just read on IMDB that Van Damme was offered a role but didn't think the role had "substance." Because his other roles HAVE?!?!? Yeah. Also, Mickey Rourke was a nice touch.

Totally. Loved it.
I didn't like the fact that Statham was the whiny bitch of the crew (that's pretty apparent from the commercials) and his subplot was pretty worthless.
But I did like Jet Li's "because I'm smaller" speech. I loved it because I've been getting dogged for being short my whole life. He's totally my hero after that. (Stupid me, taking this movie seriously...)
Oh, and Mickey Rourke's speech was money. Even in a stupid movie like this one, that was one hell of a performance.
For the sequel? I want Lungdren to be a better character, and I want Wesley Snipes and Denis Leary on board (I want a Demolition Man reunion! And if Sandra Bullock wants to come along, more's the better!).
Oh yeah, and I made it a point to listen to Drowning Pool's 'Bodies' in the car on the way over. And...yeah, it was totally like that. Awesome.

I am all over this movie, I can't wait to see it. It's a shame about Van Damme though.

Substance? Really? Correct if I'm wrong but I'm under the impression this movie is supposed to be stupid and it embraces it's stupidity. Plot? We don't need no stinking plot! We got a high body count, plenty of crap blowing up, and action stars spouting off cliche lines while looking cool! In other words, it was conceived from day 1 to be a mindless entertaining film and character development was not required.
I bet Van Damme is looking at the box office numbers and kicking himself now!

I just read on IMDB that Van Damme was offered a role but didn't think the role had "substance." Because his other roles HAVE?!?!? I'm not sure that's entirely accurate. I recall hearing a while back that at the time Stallone offered it to JCVD, he didn't have a script. I don't think it's unreasonable to ask for a script before signing to a film. I have very little faith in IMDB. As well as being a nice resource, it contains a lot of misinformation. Grain of salt. Etc.

I went to this and got exactly what it promised - big, explodey action sprayed down with tons of testosterone and just enough plot to keep the action moving. I loved it!
I appreciate the fact that it didn't try to redeem itself in any way with "character building" scenes that slow everything down. Yet it didn't feel like a cheap B-movie either. Jet Li was so cute - his line delivery after one of the big fights made me laugh my butt off.
Plus who can't love Jason Statham beating the crap out of worthless jerks who are just asking for it? The crowd was about 80% male and they were totally into it.
And the damsel-in-distress stuff, as intense as it was, at least didn't go the predictable route of gratuitous, sexual stuff that a lot of these films can veer into. Plus I was pleasantly surprised to see director Stallone give some of the showy action segments to Statham and the others.

I liked it way more than I thought. All the violence was hilarious. However, what was their mission? To destroy the girls island and palace and leave her? And where did they put the plane the second time they came to the island? The guy who plays the president in Idiocracy's gun stole the movie for me.
