I was going to ask if anyone had actually seen the trailer in 3D or what it was attached to.
Did it not appear too dim?

no, very bright and clear. Some really eye-popping party shots.

With Anna Karenina and Les Miz opening at Christmas, they probably didn't want to get lost in the Big Period Drama Clusterf*** of 2012.

More likely with the end of the Batman and Harry Potter franchises, Warner had a big hole in their summer 2013 schedule and had to fill it in with something. They've already got The Hobbit for Christmas so Gatsby gets the heave ho.

They clearly can't have any award hopes for the movie if they are kicking it to next summer as movies releases outside the Oct-Dec window usually get ignored. To be honest I thought shooting it in 3D was a horrible idea. I think moving this movie has less to do with filling a hole in their schedule than giving them time to do reshoots and fix it.

I remember Moulin Rouge was delayed a million times because Baz Luhrmann had to fix, change, re-do and overhaul and a zillion things. It was rumored to be a dud and they pushed it from awards season to the summer, where it did well. It sounds like the studio is hoping to repeat that scenario.
Baz seems to be really disorganized and unfocused in the way he works. His movies turn out the same way IMO. I wonder if a studio made him stick to a deadline whether his stuff would actually turn out better and not be all overworked.

Did Baz actually read the book?
I don't think I will see it -- I love the book too much.

Did Baz actually read the book? I don't think I will see it -- I love the book too much. I feel like we don't need another highly faithful adaptation of the book. The book's been read to death for four generations already. We know the big eye sign, the colorful shirts, the fireworks, the green light, flappers, innocence lost, yadda yadda. The Robert Redford/Mia Farrow version was very accurate to the book and bored me senseless. I love Baz's over the top theatricality and he's the only director who could get me to see another version of this homework assignment.
