I saw it and loved it. I was really wary of the some the casting choices, but it pretty much worked out; even though I still would have preferred someone other than Mulligan as Daisy. I was sad that Amitabh Bachchan's role was so small, I was hoping they would find a way to weave him into more scenes. And on a shallow note, Leo normally does nothing for me, but he looked so good in this movie. I saw it in 2D and some of the stuff at the beginning looked odd, so I might have to pony up some cash and go see it in 3D as well.

I saw it today and loved it. Most of the actors were great, except by the end I could not stand to hear one more word of of Toby Maguire. The Costume department should get an Oscar. The clothes were exquisite.

Saw it in 3D last night; it dragged on and on. The acting was good and the costumes beautiful, but I was sick of being beaten over the head with the green light.

Loved it. Leo DiCaprio really was perfect, brought a lot of humor, I haven't thought he was hot in years, did they CGI his waist? He looked stuffed into those suits in pap pictures last year during filming, heh. I've read so much ado about the soundtrack but I thought it worked well and wasn't heavy handed. My audience were bitching and complaining on the walk out, but they also were mentioning Redford, I went in for a Baz movie and got one, so my expectations were met.

Why was the audience mentioning Redford? I thought his Gatsby movie was universally agreed to be tepid and bland.
I think the casting for the main roles are perfect, just what I pictured.

Well, people like my mom had huge crushes on Robert Redford back in the day so for them he will always be THE Gatsby. Personally I think Leo has him beat by many many miles.

Saw this today and nearly fell asleep. So boring. So very, very boring.
I've never actually read the book so didn't know too much about the plot. I'm still trying to figure out why the hell Gatsby is "great" other than him maybe being some metaphor for the the American Dream?
Outside of Maguire, whose narration might just be the cure for insomnia, I did think it was well cast and I especially loved the actress playing Jordan Baker. I don't know what her character is supposed to be like but I felt she perfectly nailed the look and attitude of the time period. She was a nice contrast to Carrie Mulligan as the Manic Pixie Dreamgirl of the 1920's. Leo was good. Thought he especially did a really great job with some of the dialogue. He has quite a bit of natural charisma that I think the role needed. In my head though I kept thinking "so Jack Dawson didn't really die on the Titanic"...he sailed around with some dude, fell in love in Kentucky, went off to fight in WWI and then became a bootlegging millionaire. Nice.
The costumes were gorgeous - this should absolutely win that Oscar. Stunning work from the wardrobe department.

Saw it last night... I didn't love it, but it wasn't bad. Actually not as Baz Luhrmann-y as I expected. Is it just me or has he mellowed out a bit? Granted, I didn't watch it in 3D. Leo was definitely the best thing about the movie. He was absolute perfection in the scene where Nick had Daisy over for tea. Carey Mulligan did the best she could with a universally hated character. I liked the use of the Jay-Z/Beyonce songs, even though I thought I would hate it. I absolutely LOVED Beyonce covering Amy Winehouse's "Back to Black," I'll have to download that one! Question for fans of the book, do you think that Nick is gay or bi and in love with Gatsby? I remember people debating that in class before when I was in school, and I felt that way a little bit myself. My friend who has never read the book said after the movie, "So we're supposed to think that Nick was in love with Gatsby right? Because to me they were the romantic leads of the movie moreso than Gatsby and Daisy."

I have never, ever liked Leo - going all the way back to Growing Pains. That being said, he was absolutely fantastic here. None of these characters were especially realistic or had any depth - except his Gatsby.

Someone doesn't want Lana Del Rey's "Young and Beautiful" get nominated for Best Song.
