Adele

I like Adele and really love that she's getting heaps of play here, but Duffy (I know this isn't the Duffy thread) is a case of a-little-goes-a-long-way for me. "Warwick Avenue" is beautiful, but any time she belts a song, I want to smack something. The hyper-nasal tone of her voice makes me crazy.

It's funny, 'cause Duffy and Adele were both part of a group of female artists who emerged after the success of Amy and Back to Black. Rockferry and 19 were released within a few weeks of each other and while Adele was quite successful, Duffy was the one who surged straight to the top and had the biggest selling album of the year. It's definitely Adele's time, now, though (while Duffy's second album has underperformed, although that's down to a number of things).

I think part of the reason is that Adele fills the Amy Winehouse void better than Duffy could - at the end of the day, Duffy happily admits to being boring and drama-free, while Adele has that same open vulnerability that Amy offered in the beginning. Her Brits performance was amazing because of her voice, but it was her bursting into tears at the end and her explanation for why, that completely won people over. I think her fans, especially the women, like that she's messed up about relationships but not, well, crack. Adele is interesting without being worrying.

On a less analytical note, I love how basic her album titles are - just named after her age. I look forward to "23", "25" and "27".

I like Adele and Florence and the Machine.

They seem to actually know how to use their voices.

I think Christina Aguilera could sound good if she used her voice the way these two do.

I think Adele has an interesting face too.

And her makeup at her last couple of appearances has been flawless. She's lovely.

I saw her NPR tiny desk concert last week and was really impressed - there aren't many artists who can sit at a desk with a keyboard and belt out a song like that. She has a great laugh too. npr is also streaming her new album at that link if you want to hear it - I bought it and have been listening to it all the time. She just has an amazing voice.

That's pretty much how I feel about Duffy. Best in small doses.

I just realized that Adele didn't sing Mercy a couple weeks ago. I totally thought that was her song. I love Mercy, but I wasn't impressed with the rest of Duffy's music.

On an unrelated note, I managed to get my Adele CD out of my car CD player by sticking a screwdriver in the player.

I'm glad that Adele is getting the attention she deserves. I'm surprised that Kate Nash isn't getting some of the same though.

I think I've watched her Brit Awards performance at least 1/2 dozen times today. It is amazing.

That's really nice make-up!

And I like her hair color too.
