Getting cultural appropriation backlash for the Jamaican flag bra and the Bantu knots. What’s curious is that I’ve yet to see any backlash from Jamaicans or British Jamaicans. The criticism I’m seeing seems to be coming from the US, very much from an African American viewpoint. If Adele had turned up to Notting Hill Carnival dressed like that there would have been no issue. Anyone can wear anything they like there, it’s a celebration of Caribbean culture that everyone is welcome to join in with. |

I don’t really know enough about it to comment, but I agree with you that the people I’ve seen upset seem to be black Americans. This black Americans just gonna sit over here in my corner and watch. She’s not at the Notting hill Carnival as it was cancelled this year, she’s at her home in LA.
From what I’ve seen of the carnival this outfit would be a little on the low rent and casual side. Sure people get dressed up but they go all out, this smacks of something she grabbed off her closet floor.
Her facial expression in the picture is weird - as though she’s really not sure about the outfit....

I think a lot of the "backlash" is from the fact that the picture was total meme bait. I'll admit I was laughing like hell at the ONTD thread. |
