As soon as Brandon swore he'd never climb again, I knew he was a goner. I assumed he'd fall, not get pushed. I also knew it was a toss up on which set of blonde siblings would screw before the end of the episode. Also, at times during the ep, I thought that the king was Hagrid. I'm unfamiliar with the books/universe, so is there an actual magic element? There seems to be overtones of mysticism, but no actual otherworldly stuff. Yet. And on a shallow note, some of the guys are really hot. Especially the barbarian king. Good lord, was he hot! And on a shallow and petty note, Ned's daughter and the evil Queen's son aren't that attractive. And yes, I know they're just kids. [/meanie]

[/meanie] It looks like "Old Nan" is in the next or later episodes and her stories of past legends and beliefs will, hopefully, explain quite a bit. The second book [and hopefully shown in a second season] does have the most mystical and fantastical elements [and introduces yet another religion - although, they really haven't shown too much of the main two].

Yet.[/meanie] There is magic but it is very subtle and kept in the background, at least in the first book. The Wall was created partially through magic, for example. Dany receives a gift of three fossilized dragon eggs as a wedding gift. Her ancestors once used fire-breathing dragons in war to conquer the other kingdoms but they are long extinct.

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as Jaime Lannister makes me think of Prince Charming from Shrek 2.
Marching Penguin, I agree with you about Sansa. I expected a younger, more girly, girl.
I had Catelyn Stark as a younger person in my head, but when I think about it, she's the mother of a grown son, and living in a harsh environment, it makes sense she looks like she's been around the block a few times.
Prince Joffrey is weasly looking little punk.

Yes! I'm usually a bit turned off by fantasy (although I like sci fi, go figure), but I really liked this.

Prince Joffrey is weasly looking little punk. A thousand times yes to this. I wanted to slap the smug off his pointy little face and he didn't really do anything except just sit there.

He reminds me of Draco Malfoy. And the Prince Charming from Shrek comparison for the incest twin is dead on. Catelyn reminds me of Joan Allen. Several times I had to remind myself that it wasn't her.

So how's Sean Bean in this? Perfect casting IMO. He really captures the essence of a rugged, noble, war-weary soldier.

Atreides, I so agree. Sean Bean is all kinds of perfect in this.
