My general stance is that anything pro-tolerance is good, but if she has ignored the issue in the past it does sound a bit more hollow.
I haven't paid much attention to Charlize. Almost everyone says she's beautiful, but I wish that beauty had more character. I don't think she really stands out and she hasn't been in any movies I'd like to watch (even Monster wasn't exactly pleasant, for all the praise her performance got).

Absolutely, pro-tolerance is good, but this sounds like taking a "stand" to get to get the press off your back. Frankly, it's not like she and Stuart Townsend are the only people ever to be asked this question. I would absolutely love it if a reporter brought up all the places that gay marriage is legal and asked her what the holdup is.

I'm not really offended by the gay marriage comment. Sure, it may just be a flippant way for them to dodge the "when are you going to get married" question* but I think that her sentiment actually stands true. Some jurisdictions recognize gay marriage but that number is so low to almost be negligible. And more importantly, while some jurisdictions will give legal sanction to gay marriages those same marriages are not recognized outside of those jurisdictions. You know, Britney and Cletus' fucked up union is recognized as legal where ever they travel. If a gay couple marries in Sweden (?) and then come to, say, Australia their marriage will not be recognized as valid here by our government. And actually that is an issue before our courts at the moment - a gay man who had married his husband overseas and was then subsequently widowed in Australia is trying to claim a war widow's pension (his husband was a veteran). Our government is not too happy about that idea. So, for Charlize to make a comment about gay marriages may be just an awkward way of her saying that even though they love each other immensely they do not want to get married. That doesn't detract from the strength of their relationship - as it doesn't for so many gay and lesbian couples across the world who are prohibited from formalizing their unions.
* I hate the "when are you going to get married" question. Mr. Y and I have been together for seven years and have not tied the knot but consider ourselves solid in every respect. Marriage has just not been a priority for us - we've used the money that we could have spent on a wedding and reception to have some darn good overseas trips! And, actually, we are going to get married soon - but all those people that have nagged at us for years about it will get no advance notice! ;D

It is an old story, but that's not the picture.

According to David Edelstein, the movie isn't so bad. But it's opening ain't so grand. Think she'll get a Razzie nom? She's not supposed to be all too terrible in the movie a la Berry as Catwoman, but they do love nominating glam Oscar winners in duds.
