"You could watch an actual documentary." "What am I, a Lesbian?"
As someone who isn't a huge fan of docs, in general, I'm stealing that.

Even though the sexy in the episode was supposed to be Dave's video exploits, it was all about Max's untied bathrobe for me.
Are Elisha Cuthbert and Malin Akerman interchangeable? Because I watched "Happy Endings" and "Childrens Hospital" back-to-back and, I'll admit martinis were involved, but I can't really tell the diff.

The amazing thing is that despite being awful in almost everything else, I don't mind Malin on "Childrens Hospital." I actually think she's funny, as she was on "The Comeback."
Topic? I think this show is really the perfect complement to "Cougar Town" -- the casts seem like genuine friends hanging out and being funny. There's some off the wall/random humor and, yes, not everything is flawlessly structured or tightly written and both have a tendency to be too schmaltzy at times, but it's a group of folks that I want to spend thirty minutes with each week because it will make me smile, if not laugh out loud. What more can one ask from a sitcom?

Oh, I wasn't really dissing either Akerman or Cuthbert, and the way Malin throws herself into CH's nouveau-Airplane! farce is equal to the rest of the cast. I do love that show.
I think you've hit on why I like Happy Endings: its intentions are modest and the characters are, uh, real-er than the iconic characters of Friends. I wouldn't want to be in the same coffee shop as the Friends friends; I'd def want to be seated at the diner booth next to the Happy Endings crew.

I feel the same way about HIMYM (and sometimes feel that Sunny represents my friends at our worst). It's such a basic thing for a friendship-based ensemble show to get right - oh, hey, do we believe these people are actually friends and/or believable couples and would want to hang out together? - and yet every other new show this season in the same vein of couple/friend ensemble (Mad Love, Perfect Couples, some random NBC thing that was delayed until this summer) totally failed at it. It's crazy that this show was one of the last to premiere - which is why I think it got initially dismissed - and is the only one worth a damn.

I started watching this due to this thread. I dunno. Something is...missing. I can't put my finger on it.

It definitely got better as the season went along. The episode they aired as a repeat was initially intended as an earlier one. "Dave of the Dead" (the hipster-skewing one), "Mein Coming Out" (Max has to act straight for his parents), "You've Got Male" and "The Shershow Redemption" are probably the stronger ones. I know it's lame to say stick with it, but I seriously thought that the Cougar Town pilot was the worst thing I've ever seen and now I adore the show. This show was similar. in how it went from "eh, it's on after something I like and I'm not going to change the channel even though it's only mildly amusing" to appointment viewing.

When I first starting watching I was put off by the excessive pop culture references and the unrealistic dialogue. It didn't take long to get over that and just enjoy it. Plus, I watch with my daughter who is completely clueless about all things 90's since she was just a baby then and get to take advantage of the opportunity to explain important historical events like Color Me Badd and their sexing up of America.

Megan Mullaly as Penny's mom? Genius. I think this may be my favorite comedy on the air right now. It makes me sad that it is struggling in the ratings while shows like Last Man Standing and 2 Broke Girls are big hits.

I know! I keep bugging people to watch it. This season has been fantastic and much tighter than last -- it's really coming into its own. I hope it sticks around.
