I've been reading about the new Koningslied, and finally got to hear it today. Could any of the Eurogreecies explain what the furore is about? The song in general sounds sort of overwrought, like a sweeping score from a movie. Ha! That story has the link to the Utrechters' song! Certainly a catchier song and probably more fun to sing, especially on Queen's Day when half the population is cheerfully drunk.

It's official: Queen Beatrix has abdicated, King Willem-Alexander is now the first King of The Netherlands in over 120 years. I saw some video of the family at the celebrations on BBC America this morning. The three little girls are adorable!

We watched the abdication this morning and then the investiture this afternoon. The princesses were adorable, but it was Maxima who was the most fun to watch throughout it all. She looked like she wanted to burst with joy and disbelief. Especially during the investiture ceremony. From the moment they walked out of the palace toward the church, she looked like she was dying to smile. A friend joked that she must have had to superglue her lips together to stop from smiling like crazy (not considered appropriate during the ceremony).

Somewhere, Prince Charles is wishing he were born in the Netherlands. German TV were definitely poking fun at him, as they so wryly noted this was his 2nd royal inauguration he's attended in this country.

I wouldn't worry about Charles--I'm pretty sure the British Royals consider the Dutch gang to be slackers.

I couldn't help but notice everyone's favorite prince, Prince Albert came alone. Could this signal trouble in paradise?
I'm not worried about Charles either. When he finally does become king, he'll inherit close to a billion dollars (maybe more), and be the highest profile King in the world.
Honestly, I thought Princess Letizia looked more eager to claim the throne with her long gazes at the crown as she and Felipe passed it on the way to their seats.
Also, I could be mistaken, but I didn't see our namesake or her crown prince at the ceremony. I guess MC isn't close to the Dutch King and Queen.

Well, they're not really royal anymore, so they're probably excluded from things like this. This has all re-ignited talk in the UK of QE2 abdicating, which just will never happen, IMO. She'll be there until the end, and they'll just gradually give more responsibilities to Charles and William should her health deteriorate. It makes me laugh how people also still talk about "skipping" Charles and handing the Crown to William when the Queen dies. Surely that goes completely against what a monarchy is? You can't just pick and choose your monarchs based on who you like and who you still blame for upsetting Diana. Besides, I don't think William will make any better a king than Charles. Back on topic, the Dutch royal princesses looked adorable in their co-ordinating outfits.

I don't think they could legally skip Charles in any case.

Maybe I'm wrong but I always got the feeling Charles could care less about being King. He seems perfectly content tending to his plants and feeding Camilla. Those Dutch princesses are adorable.
