That's a good synopsis, Kostgard. I just don't like the phrase "love bombed" because I don't think Katie was ever under any love spell. I think she fell for the fun and exciting lifestyle that Tom presented to her, as well as the opportunity to be half of a famous power couple with all of the perks that go with it. I think she always knew she was making a deal with the devil, but by the time she realized the deal was not as harmless as it initially appeared, it was too late.
I do think Tom rushed her into a very accelerated commitment timeline that didn't give her time to come to her senses and back out. But I don't think she was the victim of feelings.

I do think Tom rushed her into a very accelerated commitment timeline that didn't give her time to come to her senses and back out. But I don't think she was the victim of feelings. That was my take for a while, but after absorbing several documentaries/podcasts about cults, I've shifted my take a bit and I do think she was manipulated a bit through coercive control. And I don't necessarily think she was a victim of true deep feelings after the initial rush produced by Tom's bombardment wore off (which is why I think she looked like hell there for a while. It wore off and she realized she had already tethered herself to that dude and wasn't sure what to do next). I do think a part of her was excited about her and Tom being this amazing power couple, but I do also think he tried to sell her on an epic romance and that worked (for a little while) and I do think she got sucked in and stayed due to cult-y manipulation. Tom hooked up or tried to hook up with other co-stars/women in Hollywood and it either never had a chance (the stories of him trying to woo Jennifer Garner - I don't think she was ever interested in the bait he dangled in front of her) or the lady in question probably liked the celebrity/opportunities he offered, but it fizzled because she wouldn't buy into the cult stuff (I think this is what happened with Penelope Cruz). But I think Katie was ripe for the picking. She probably had ambition, she had just ended a relationship and was probably lonely, she was in a mushy place in her life (she had just moved to New York to reinvent herself) where she didn't have a strong sense of self and was probably prone to the cult's manipulations.

I think "love bombed" works because that's the actual term used to describe when a cult works to draw someone in. Katie wasn't A-list, by any stretch, and to my recollection she hadn't ever been involved with someone who was. To have Tom Cruise bring the full weight of the Scientology organization to bear on her, in addition to his own charisma, must've been almost dizzying. But then, of course, the bloom was off the rose. She seems self-aware enough to realize how ridiculous the couch-jumping phase was. But it became too late to get out pretty darn fast.

Yeah, at this point we're looking back over fifteen years of Tom being ridiculous, but back then, he was A-List, riding high, winning awards. Katie's previous boyfriends were Joshua Jackson and Chris Klein. Neither of them were any more famous than she was, and Tom was rushing her like nobody's business. I think she got swept up in the beginning, but once you're in it's really hard to get out.

I'm trying to picture her career trajectory without the TomKat phase and I'm seeing something closer to the Jennifer Love Hewitt track. Granted, I don't follow her closely, but I can't think of any breakout projects that would have kept her name in the headlines through the years had she not participated in this insanity.

Katie Holmes is such an enigma. Ehhhh...not sure I agree. I think she was a none-to-bright starlet who was sucked into a cult and was lucky enough to have smarter people in her life to help her escape. She will keep quiet as part of her divorce settlement.

I have spent 14 years trying to figure out what makes Katie Holmes tick and I still don't know and could still debate it at length. She's a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma! And also a simpleton, probably.
