Coming out of semi-lurkerdom to share my own complete indifference-bordering-on-dislike for the Coens. Raising Arizona was...okay, I guess. Fargo was fine, but nothing special. I fell asleep fifteen minutes into the Big Lebowski and frankly have never given a shit whether The Dude does, or does not, "abide." I can't even tell you how many people have burst into fake tears, accused me of being soulless, told me I don't really "understand" cinema (What's to understand? The Dude freakin' PUT ME TO SLEEP, okay?), etc. when I confessed my complete state of meh toward Ethan and Joel, which has undoubtedly turned me off their movies even further.
Also, on a completely different topic, I thought Shakespeare in Love was a better movie than Saving Private Ryan, and totally deserved that Oscar.

Heh, I thought I was the only one who experienced the wrath of religious fervor when I gave an unpopular movie opinion such as:
"Disney's The Muppets": Shitty fan-fiction with lousy songs. I have been told I have no sense of wonder. "Toy Story 3": Maudlin re-hash of Toy Story 2, and moderately manipulative to boot. I have been told I have no soul. "The English Patient": Boring as hell. I have been accused of knowing nothing about movies. "Pacific Rim": Loved it to itty bitty pieces. Basically I'm a mindless drone and I'm responsible for the downfall of humanity. "The Avengers": Sucked worse than a black hole. Plot holes abounded. Have been told that I am not a nerd for not appreciating the offerings of Joss Whedon.

Heh, I didn't realize the English Patient was supposed to be art cinema. I loved it like crazy in high school because it was OTT and dramatic and ~tragycal~ and I had run through all the Merchant Ivory films at the video store. Also, I loved the furore about the possible Nazi collaboration thing that was left out of the movie. Note: I'm not, like, a fan of Nazi collaboration, but I love ethically complicated characters. Anyway, I can totally get the idea that it's boring or a YMMV picture.

I don't know, my experience has been that not liking Pacific Rim was the unpopular opinion. Everyone I know who's seen it always goes on and on about how awesome it is. I thought was both boring and confusing at the same time.

Here's my unpopular opinion. I thought Captain America and the whatever soldier was a steaming pile. Younger Nukem (17) and I started mocking it about 20 minutes in and didn't stop until the end.

I generally avoid the superhero/comic book movies, so it's all a steaming pile of boring to me, although I did like the first Iron Man from 2008 or whenever. Could someone point out a good example of the genre?

I thought was both boring and confusing at the same time. I saw Pacific Rim a few days ago on cable, and really liked it, which I didn't expect to. I think the way to make a bad Action type/Comic Book movie is to get bogged down in lovey angsty stuff (see the 4th Superman, where he becomes a bad/good Superman, or when Spiderman doesn't want to be Spiderman. It says ACTION movie, not introspection movie), and while we like to have a love interest, just a few longing looks will do, thank you very much. And good CGI, the first Hulk CGI was awful. I thought both the first Thor and the first Captain American were slow, too much exposition, But loved all the Iron Mans, and The Avengers. Chonies, I liked the second Ironman better than the first, and really loved the Avengers, so that is where I would start if you liked the first Ironman. There were a few characters I wasn't familiar with Comic book wise, so that isn't a problem, and the boring comic characters (see Captain America) really shows up will in the Avengers Movie. My fav Marvel Comic character is the Flash. I hear the might be making a movie of that! Which is way cool!

Could someone point out a good example of the genre? Bearing in mind that I like almost all of them--Spiderman 2 (from the original trilogy) is excellent. Probably the best ratio of good writing/acting/story telling to making things go boom. I also think the second Captain America and Avengers were just about on par with Iron Man 1 (especially Avengers) and I don't think you need to watch all the other movies to appreciate those, but mileage varies wildly on that.

I don't like superhero movies either and forced myself to watch the Spiderman movies with Tobey Maguire because they're popular and everyone wanted to see them, but I really liked The Amazing Spiderman with Andrew Garfield. It had more of a lighthearted feel to it.

I always hated the English Patient too. What I remember is the guy was a cartographer and yet when he leaves her in the cave he has no clue about towns, rivers, mountains, you know, locations that a map maker would draw.
