Ugh I just needed to put this somewhere and this seems like the only safe place. I'm really disappointed that Brenden Frasier got Best Actor. I just don't think he deserved it. I hated that movie and couldn't even finish it. But Colin Farrell was fantastic in Banshees and so was Austin Butler in Elvis (even if he's turned out to be an annoying little twat) IMO Frasier got the award because he is a genuinely nice guy who went through a hard time and people were happy to see him make a comeback. But that's so unfair to actors who had stronger performances. The Oscars really need to come up with some sort of Congeniality award and stop giving people "Feel Good" awards. And this irks me even more because this is kinda the 2nd undeserved award he's been part of - I am STILL pissed about that abomination Crash winning over so many more deserving films. Let me start out by saying that I have tremendous sympathy for everything Brenden Frasier has gone through. I am really happy for him that he's had this kind of redemption arc. BUT. Marc Maron interviewed him a couple of months ago and I thought he was kind of annoying. He has this clipped, low-energy way of speaking that was just...weird. And so I thought it must be that chronic depression had done a number on him. But then at the very end of the interview he asked if he could do Marc Maron's "trademark" line and he screamed "WHAT THE F*CK!?" with all the energy and charisma that I associate with him from earlier in his career. So it really made me wonder if he was leaning into the wounded giant shtick a little bit for the sake of his Oscar campaign. I haven't seen it and don't plan to know that I've heard more people say bad things about it. Was it someone here that called it misery porn? I really don't have time to spend on that. cremetangerine82 I also thought Stephanie Tsu had the stronger performance. I'm still happy for Jamie Lee but I really wish Angela Bassett would have won it.

I finally got to see EEAAO (in my local movie theater, yay!) yesterday!! No way my dogs would have let me watch those 2 1/2 hours at home without distraction! If we are talking about that movie alone, I agree, prisma! Stephanie Hsu absolutely deserved that Supporting Actor award over Jamie Lee. The character of Joy was such an integral part of the movie and she killed it. I haven't watched the Black Panther sequel yet but I'm sure Angela Bassett had more scenes that warranted a win over JL. As much as I think she's a lovely person, JL was barely in the movie! End point being, this was definitely a "Let's give you accolades based on your longevity in Hollywood" rather than the performance itself. See: Giving Leonardo DiCaprio an award for The Revenant rather than What's Eating Gilbert Grape or The Basketball Diaries (two incredible performances, IMO)

I didn’t enjoy EEAAO, in fact I was on the verge of falling asleep in the theatre. How’s that for an UO?!

I didn’t enjoy EEAAO, in fact I was on the verge of falling asleep in the theatre. How’s that for an UO?! I watched EEAO on my neighbors' 7-foot TV (I was housesitting), with home theater surround sound, and I turned it off after about an hour, because I kept falling asleep. So I share your UO. We have free Showtime this week, so my brother decided to try EEAO while I grabbed my nighttime shower. I went back out in the living room, and he was watching Gonzaga's come-from-behind victory over UCLA. I asked him, "Gave up on EEAO?" He snapped, "God, I hate that stupid f*cking movie, so I turned the game back on. Good thing Gonzaga decided to win this one."

EEAAO was the inflight movie on my flight to Hawaii last summer. The guy across the aisle from me watched it and I found myself watching his screen (no sound). It looked like a crazy hyper movie and was totally unfollowable without sound. I ended up watching the 2022 BP winner CODA which was amazing and I highly recommend it! I looked like a weirdo crying on the airplane but that movie is a tearjerker.

I enjoyed EEAAO and have seen it twice, but it is definitely not a movie for everyone. It's really a niche movie that blew up and the Academy (IMO) exploited its unexpected success to distract from the fact that it really does only like to reward a certain type of movie starring white people.
What I really liked about EEAAP was that, underneath all the kookieness, special effects, and stunts, it was really a story about a mother and daughter learning to connect with each other. And I liked that it told a universal story using an underrepresented group of people. (ALL families have communication problems!) But, again, not a movie for everyone. I can understand why people wouldn't like it because it is a LOT.
I guess my unpopular movie opinion is that I hated Love Actually.

I did love Jamie Lee Curtis' acceptance speech. I was rooting for either Farrell or Fraser, so I'm happy. EEAAO, Ke Huy Quan, and Michelle Yeoh are life. P.S. - I HATE the "To me, you are beautiful" scene in Love Actually. It's so gross and manipulative.
