I can't stand Jennifer Lopez, but I can see why Davis (if, in fact, she had say over who was chosen) would cast her ahead of an unknown. Davis can do a whole lot more good for charity if she's making successful films, and an unknown could really hurt the bottom line.
ETA: I love Davis' dress from the SAG Awards -- the white looks so cool and crisp against that lovely skin -- but I don't care for her makeup. It seems harsh and unflattering.

I don't know about this particular movie, but sometimes films can't get made until or unless major names are attached. Sometimes funding is stipulated on a specific cast. It's seriously a clusterfuck of drama and negotiating. I can't really call her a hypocrite when I don't know how pre-production/funding played out.

If she wants to be a successful producer and build up some clout for herself in the industry then she needs to produce successful movies. Given J-Lo's current movie cost $4 mil to make and opened to $15 mil this weekend at the box office, casting J-Lo seems like a smart business decision.
When millions of dollars are on the line I'm doubtful you'll find many execs in the industry casting roles out of the goodness of their heart rather than who can open a movie.
I was pulling for Tatiana to win for Orphan Black but Viola was a very worthy winner.

It's a gritty drama starring two 40+ women of color. I have no trouble believing there could be funding/distribution challenges considering the state of Viola and JLo's movie careers when it was actually made (pre-HTGAWM and Boy Next Door). It could still easily be one of those projects that ends up getting a VOD release.

Viola herself is still very much a struggling, working actress. Sure she has the TV show at the moment and she's getting cast in movies but she's not pulling in seven figure paychecks nor are the roles guaranteed to last. So I'm puzzled why it should fall on her shoulders to make a path for others in the industry when Viola herself still faces an uphill battle.

I watched an excerpt of Viola's acceptance speech. She spoke about how grateful that TPTB chose someone who looked like her to star in HTGAWM. She knows what's up. She knows that being a talented actress doesn't guarantee getting cast especially if you are a woman of color (and especially a dark-skinned one like Viola) - and Viola's been in the game for a while. Yet, I understand the point. It'd be great if there were more opportunities for actresses of color - including the lesser-known ones. This seems to be a classic case of "don't hate the player, hate the game".

Filming began back in January 2014 for Lila and Eve. HTGAWM didn't happen till this fall, it's getting great buzz but Viola wasn't cast in it till late February.
