This is why I respect actors who pull that much harder when the material is crap. I like Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling even more for their work in The Notebook. That was a steaming pile of sentimental material, but just about everyone in the cast did a damn good job. It almost made me forget how crappy the story was. The actors saved that movie.

Oddly not so much. I think Natalie Portman is an overrated actress but I got more of a feel that the writing and direction were smothering her acting than that she was just phoning it in. Natalie Portman herself has said though that she wasn't trying all that hard because the material wasn't ~good enough, which I thought was pretty unprofessional of her. Who knows if it's true - I think that people pride themselves on being good at what they do, and some would rather have people think that they're just lazy instead of incompetent. Better (in their minds) to say, "Oh, I wasn't trying that hard anyway!" as an excuse for why they suck in a film. Huh... I didn't know that. Actually lowers my opinion of her because as you say that is unprofressional.

I seriously have a like/hate relationship with that movie for all the reasons you listed. By all rights, it's a terrible movie but damn if those two (as well as the supporting actors) lifted that utter dreck to something enjoyable. That's what true actors do. Natalie earns my utmost ire. You are getting paid to act so do the best that you can do. I don't get paid nearly as much and I give all to my job. I can't stand her.

I feel the same way about The Notebook and even while I was watching it, I knew the material was terrible, but the acting sucked me right in and I admit that I cried at the end.

Yes, the actors committed to it and you could tell.
As for Miss Mara, I'll wait til I see the movie. But she is already bordering on insufferable.

She really is diminishing the good will her terrific performance has generated. Fincher should've mentored her better, because it's the acting, music and direction which elevates TGwtDT from run-of-the-mill stuff like SUV, not the source material.

I feel quite bad for her. Yeah, she put her foot in her mouth, but the way so many bloggers are jumping all over her and assuming the most negative things possible from her words is unfair, IMO. It's just as likely that she thought she was being funny and self-deprecating; this is her first round of major interviews and things can sound a lot worse in print, without the benefit of tone/context. She's still learning how the things she says are going to come across and I think it's only human for her to misjudge some stuff and make mistakes. I'm with you on this one - what she said sounded stupid, but as someone else also pointed out, this is the first time she's really been scrutinized by the press/bloggers. I can't imagine the pressure she must be under as the lead character to sell the movies and make a good impression. I've said plenty of stupid things myself, so I feel for her. That said, during press for her next movie, I'd expect her to have her shit together a little more.

She really is diminishing the good will her terrific performance has generated. And that's pretty ridiculous. Her performance is getting rave reviews, but all over the internet, bloggers would rather slam her for some tactless comments? It's not like she went on a Christian Bale-style rant; there seems to be a huge overreaction to what she said and an eagerness to infer all the worst possible things about her character from it.

Don't you think there was some prehate for Mara anyway, ronette, given how beloved Salander is to fans and that Rapace did a great job embodying the role? Mara's performance was far superior for me (see my review in the movie's thread) without blowing Rapace's away, and it's precisely because there's not a single thing cute about Mara's Salander. It bugged the way Rapace's performance was embraced by many as pure heroine and not a deeply-dysfunctional avenger.

Perhaps people have been irritated by her comments, but I also found the marketing of the movie off putting, her interview with Fincher was silly, their relationship seems too Svengali-like, her sense of entitlement is a bit much, her constantly-stated over-identification with Lisbeth is annoying, and I have serious misgivings about the movie. There are many reasons why people may dislike her -- take your pick.
