I feel quite bad for her. Yeah, she put her foot in her mouth, but the way so many bloggers are jumping all over her and assuming the most negative things possible from her words is unfair, IMO. It's just as likely that she thought she was being funny and self-deprecating; this is her first round of major interviews and things can sound a lot worse in print, without the benefit of tone/context. She's still learning how the things she says are going to come across and I think it's only human for her to misjudge some stuff and make mistakes.

She's not a fresh faced innocent plucked from the crowd - she's a woman of 26 who's been in the business for five years, has grown up with an older sister who's been acting since she was a teen, had an attention grabbing part in The Social Network and has already played the lead in a Hollywood film.
Now yes she probably hasn't had to face so much scrunity before but I wouldn't think it would be completely new to her.

You wouldn't have to be fresh from a farm out in the sticks to be overwhelmed by the kind of attention and scrutiny Mara is getting at the moment. Yes, she signed up for it, but handling it in theory and in practice are two different things. If she's still coming across badly in the promo for the next release, then fair enough, but people seem awfully willing to be as harsh as possible towards her right from the very start.

I agree, Ronette. Everybody makes mistakes. It is how they go about correcting their errors that matters. Rooney has the presence of mind (or the presence of mind to listen to good PR handlers) to realise how she is coming across, and correcting her errors. I have a feeling that if she learns from this, she will be pretty bland in future interviews and then get slammed for that. Oh, well, one of the perils of fame is you can't please all the people all the time!

I think the reason I'm not giving her the benefit of the doubt is partly because this is a real beserk button issue for me since I'm an extra and I know how hard everyone works on a movie or on television.
What really gets to me though is her Nightmare on Elm Street comments (I haven't seen the SVU episode so I can't comment on that.) She was awful in that film, just completely dull and lifeless and if she was just going through the motions because she felt the role was beneath her then frankly I find her attitude actively offensive.

I don't really feel sorry for her because "SVU, I mean people are so obsessed with that show, I don't get it" is kind of a douchebag statement even if you weren't talking to the press. It's not something that puts her in the irredeemable hate category by any means, but slamming the audience of a show that put money in your pocket doesn't endear me either.

I don't feel sorry for her either. She opened her mouth & inserted her foot. Now, she's backtracking because people told her to sit her ass down and be appreciative of the roles she got before Girl. Lesson learned.

Shades of Natalie Portman in Star Wars... Oddly not so much. I think Natalie Portman is an overrated actress but I got more of a feel that the writing and direction were smothering her acting than that she was just phoning it in. The Nightmare remake wasn't a great film by any shakes but there was more room for the actors to stretch their legs - as I said earlier Katie Cassidy did a good job.

Natalie Portman herself has said though that she wasn't trying all that hard because the material wasn't ~good enough, which I thought was pretty unprofessional of her. Who knows if it's true - I think that people pride themselves on being good at what they do, and some would rather have people think that they're just lazy instead of incompetent. Better (in their minds) to say, "Oh, I wasn't trying that hard anyway!" as an excuse for why they suck in a film.
