io9He pitched the same actress for Rue that ended up in Gary Ross' version. I actually think that looks like an awful hot mess. It's like one of those fan-made, fantasy casting editing projects that turn up on YouTube. The casting (aside from Rue, Peeta & Gale) is especially atrocious. I think it also highlights just how much of the movie's success was due to Jennifer Lawrence absolutely nailing the role of Katniss. As for the violence - what violence? Seriously, the first book is pretty PG rated. Books 2 & 3 are another matter but other than the initial fight at the Cornucopia, there isn't very much fighting that happens - especially not any that Katniss actually witnesses.

I liked the look of the movie, especially the very colorful costumes. Jennifer Lawrence was great, commanding. But I lost interest about halfway through, shortly after they start the fight (or whatever it's called). Did each district have their own handlers? Were Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks, and Lenny Kravitz all just for those two? That was confusing. Also, when it was time for Jennifer to go to battle, all the goodbyes were so emotional. I didn't get the bonding before that moment so it all seemed a bit heavy-handed. Harumph. I guess it wasn't for me.
Though, I did figure out where a couple of reference I've seen on the internet came from ("I volunteer in tribute!" and "That is mahogany!"), so there's that.

The tributes from each district each had a handler from the Capital, a stylist from the Capital, and are mentored by a previous winner from their district. Effie was the Capital handler for District 12, Haymitch (Woody) was a prior winner from District 12, and Cinna (Lenny) was the Capital stylist assigned to District 12. The tributes from the other districts weren't the focus of the story so we never see their handlers, mentors, and stylists. They really didn't make that stuff clear, nor did they develop the relationships very well.

I am so curious as to how dark they are going to go in these movies. The books are much, much darker than the other recent books that have been adapted to screen. I just can't wrap my head around how they film the first half of the 3rd book without alienating the movie audience for the series.

Wow, yes! Looks great but interestingly, not a single scene from the Quarter Quell and the characters we meet there. I wanted to see that but I guess so did every other fan and Lionsgate know that. Now that's a teaser ;-)

Witchypoo, you may not be that invested, but the first book is, IMO, the best, and a very quick read.

I won't be surprised if they go the Potter route. With the exception of the first 2 movies they cherry picked a few book points, deleted and changed a whole bunch a stuff and make an audience friendly entertaining movie. I was way late to that franchise having recently read the books after seeing the movies and was surprised at how much content was changed and omitted not to mention how much more complex, darker and somewhat grittier the books were in comparison.
