Claflin won me over as Finnick. He's one of my favorite characters in the book so I was happy that he turned out well in the film. I wish they would have directly addressed his gigilo status in the Capitol. That made me sympathize a lot with his character in the book. He just gets passed around like a piece of meat and can't be with Annie, whom he truly loves Philip Seymour Hoffman was a huge disappointment. I think he did this movie for the paycheck. He totally phoned in that performance. Very miscast. I can't believe I pictured him as Haymitch when I read the books. Woody Harelson is perfect. I would suck as a casting director I love Katniss and Peeta. They have such a deep bond. The sexual chemistry is lacking but I totally believe that she is falling in love with him and that they should end up together. I think the films sell the relationship better than the books do thanks to the performances of the actors. Jennifer Lawrence has the best scream. I love the way they show that Peeta's strengths are not physical but mental and emotional and they are valuable. Yes, he is "the girl" and I love it. Gale is hot and that's it. Plus, Peeta makes cakes and bread, the most important skill of all.

I wonder if they shot a scene of Katniss seeing Peeta's paintings for the first time. There was a moment in the book and I'm sure it would have made it more clear to non-book readers that Peeta had painted Rue in the gamemaker's room. Also, for all the "Katniss ALWAYS has to save Peeta!" talk around the 'net, have to say: she also saved big strong Gale from the Peacekeepers. So there. ;-)

I must be the only one who loved PSH. I think he chose to play it understated because there are so many larger than life characters already. I totally bought what he was selling.
And I am also cracking up that Gale has become "Thor's Brother". I guess it is better than "Miley's boyfriend".

I liked PSH's performance just fine too. I think he underplayed it because Plutarch's motives are supposed to be murky until the end. He's not like others in the Capitol, but is it because he's eeeeeeevil, like Snow? Or because he didn't drink the Kool-Aid (like Cinna)? He's got more to do in Mockingjay, so we'll see what he brings to the role in that film.
An I like that Katniss always has to save Peeta (and to be fair, he saves her a few times too). There have been countless action movies where the female love interest is always falling down, taking the wrong path and walking right into danger, etc., and the hero always has to come swooping in and save her dumb butt. I like that we have a movie where the roles are reversed and it's the female heroine who has to save the male love interest who is always falling down, taking the wrong path, etc.

Sing it. The woman being the strong one is a welcome change.
As for not explaining how Finnick was prostituted out in the Capitol? I thought that wasn't revealed until the third book.
I was fine with PSH. Plutarch is trying to fit in and lay low. He will come into his own in the next movie.
I love Donald Sutherland, so deliciously evil.

I'm wondering though if they'll leave that part out. They didn't show him with any women in the movie, and in the second book Katniss notices him with different women all the time. It'll look like it's coming out of nowhere if they bring it up in the next movie.

IIRC, didn't they pan out to several audience members giggling and fanning themselves when Finnick was giving his Cesar interview. I thought his speech was purposely vague that yeah, he could be talking about anyone he slept with, but he was truly talking about Annie. If you had read the books, it made sense as far as him playing the game (gotta satisfy the Capitol customers) and if you didn't, it just came across as a nice farewell to his love.

The part that confused me was that Katniss made a remark in the movie about people paying Finnick for the pleasure of his company. That made it seem like she knew he was seducing folks/having sex with them for money, but thought that he was doing it himself (and didn't realize that Snow was pimping him out). That mostly makes sense, but I thought at this point in the books everyone thought Finnick was just a player who loved seducing people for the game of it, not for money. To me, that takes away from the shock/tragedy of Finnick's confession. I had figured that he probably wasn't actually banging everyone in the Capitol, and he just let the gossipers say what they will. I was really surprised and saddened when we found out what was really going on.

I thought the hints of Finnick's prostitution was odd too since it wasn't mentioned until Mockingjay. Still I thought it added an extra layer to Johanna/Katniss conversation about Finnick and Annie. Like the wheels were starting to turn in Katniss's head.

FINALLY saw this the other night. Hell yes. Love Finnick. Awesome casting. You guys have already said everything I was going to. But, um... Cinna could come back, right? Right? (I cried. Like a little girl. Covered my mouth and everything. Even though I knew it was going to happen. haha. FML.)
JH ruins Peeta. (Not that I especially liked him in the books, but he just makes it worse.) THAT was horrible casting. Awful. Ugh. He just looks so stupid all the time. "Duhhh." I've said it from the beginning, and he's marginally improved, but just not enough. And he's so unfortunate looking. Surrounded by all these beautiful people. Then there's JH.
