That is a great scene that hunter linked above. Her character sounds really unhinged and yes, not very like able. Makes me want to me see it even more.

Red-Band TV spot. DAMN. They are NOT shying away from having an unlikable protagonist whatsoever. Charlize's delivery of "love your sweater" is a thing of beauty. I always love it when someone's being mean to a character played by Elizabeth Reaser Seriously though, the film looks great thanks to Charlize's character.

divasahm - given how Oswalt went from kinda schlubby to one of the most fundamentally decent and stand-up characters on the show on the Diablo-created (and sadly canceled) United States of Tara, I could actually see that happening.

OT but I am still mourningTara. Risky but well executed premise, and the cast was great together. I wonder if viewership sunk it vs. production costs, salaries etc.

I saw this today, and I think it's great. The dialogue is far more natural than in Diablo Cody's other movies. Charlize and Patton Oswalt were amazing.

I saw this and I loved it. It seemed slow at first but really got interesting when there were scenes with Charlize and Patton, they had such great chemistry together. It really showed how lost and immature Mavis was. I did not see her as unlikeable person but one who is very just very lonely, depressed and an alcoholic. She desperately wanted to re-live her glory days in high-school and that was not happening. There were some really touching scenes with her and Patton, as well as some real awkwardness she displayed at the Baby naming party..It really was refreshing to see such a physically beautiful woman who was such a mess.
Charlize has such an amazing ability to display such intense emotions. I hope she gets nominated for an Oscar for this.
I loved the scenes whereMavis is making a drunken scene at the baby naming party. It was so awkward and heart-breaking.
Then, she goes over to Matt's place, just distraught. She strips off her stained blouse and skirt, revealing her plastic stick on bra and panty hose. I cannot picture another actress doing that. She is crying and wanting to be held.
The bar scene where Buddy's wife's plays in band called Nipple Implosion. Hee! Anyway, the band starts off with a song that Mavis plays over and over in her car as she drives to the town of Mercury. The song was her and Buddy's makeout song. As the song is playing, Mavis displays the saddest expression I've ever seen. At first I thought it was the stink eye, but no, it was pure sadness.

I totally agree about the bar scene. It was like she had the realization that Buddy had really and truly moved on and didn't love her anymore, that she'd been replaced. I felt really bad for her.
The character of Matt's sister Sandra was interesting. She hadn't really moved on either, she still desperately wanted to be friends with Mavis and was kissing her ass all over the place despite the fact that Mavis obviously could not have cared less about her.
On a lighter note, there were some funny moments. I laughed when Matt said "I'm a fat geek, I know what zombies are."

SO looking forward to this, but I have to see when it's being release in London, or if I need to wait until we're back in LA....

I saw this on Friday. I liked it, thought Charlize was great, but I'm a bit unsure about the ending. Partly because I read David Edelstein's review where he trashed the movie and gave away the ending (jerk), I wasn't sure if how I would have reacted if I hadn't seen it coming.
I think Juno was a more successful movie (although I didn't miss the Cody-isms). What I did love about it is how it highlighted the culture contrast contrast between the city and the suburbs (or small towns) with how Charlize is looking at every Kentaco Hut she passes by.
Man, critics love to hate Diablo, which makes me feel a little bad for her.

I didn't like the ending (especially Mavis and Patton Oswalt's character hooking up- puhleeez!), but I enjoyed the movie overall. Charlize was fantastic! I got a lot of good chuckles from her character. I especially liked how the Kardashians were always on it the background.
