Are colored streaks au courant? Some of my students have them, along with feathers. I also associate them with 40-something divorcée to me, usually adorning angry-chicken 'dos, and with giraffe-print tote bags with chunky rhinestone embellishments.
I'd like something a little more action-hero or riotgrrrl (I'm trying not to think that it might be "clowny"). I have that "I need to do something radical" feeling and a tattoo is appealing but I don't have the money.
Yeah...sigh. I think I'll just stick to regular red.

Why don't you put some pink streaks in? I see lots of people with that, or ombre colored hair.
Although I have to say, I like the all-over one color look (pink or blue or whatever). It reminds me of the heroine of the Michael Cera movie with the crazy exes.

I've got pink highlights in my hair and they get tons of compliments. I LOVE them, I got them at first just to look cute in pigtails with my big dorky helmet for snowboarding, and now I have some orange streaks as well, and thinking about a little purple. Watch out, it's habit forming!
ETA: I will say though that people think I am around 18 now even though I'm 32, not particularly in a good way. I'm definitely too old for them, but I don't care at all, pink hair!!

Professionally, I get blonde highlights already, and my hairdresser just makes some of them pink, she doesn't charge any extra. I think it would be really easy to do at home, though, as long as you don't have to bleach the hair first. Do it, they are fun!
The same kind of look with pastels can be done with chalkboard chalk as well, but don't wear a dark shirt.

Warning about hot pink DIY hair streaks!
I dyed the tips of my hair hot pink for Halloween three years ago and I never could get it to wash out. My stylist ended up cutting them out. A little girl in 2.0's dance class dyed her hair pink for Halloween, well, I am sure her mom did since she is four, but they could not get it out either and they have been slowly cutting it out for months. It is not a good look on her now.
Just food for thought!

Does anyone have any product suggestion for getting some shine into the hair?
My hair is super shiny after coloring it, but then it gradually fades and fades to dull. Is there anything to put on after styling that adds shine?

I don't have colored hair, but from perusing beauty boards here are a few suggestions. Good luck.
1. Washing hair less often. 2. Using sulfate free shampoos when washing. 3. Using a silicone shine product. Use a light hand or these can look greasy. 4. Use a demi-perm product such as Sebastian Laminates (fka Cellophanes) or Redken Shades EQ when the original color gets dull. These come in clear and tinted shades. People use these alone and on top of existing color.
ETA: clarification.

If you want to try hair streaks without the commitment you could try chalking. You use oil based chalk (from an art supply store) and rub it over damp hair. It should wash out easily.

Does it look brighter with the oil based chalk? My friend has black hair and just used pink and blue chalk like you would on the sidewalk on dry hair. It works ok but makes a total mess, will let her know to try this way, thank you!
