MrF’s father and uncle both died of Alzheimer. He is showing early symptoms, but refuses to see a doctor. He says they can’t do anything. I think he’s afraid of a diagnosis. (He’s 70…) *hugs* I get how he feels. My mom died of pancreatic cancer, and when I started having some problems that might have been related to my pancreas, I totally panicked and didn't want to get tested (it turned out to be something else entirely, luckily for me.)

Based on his father and uncle, it might be 10 more years before it gets bad. But I can tell he’s different and I’m not responding well (he’s like a petulant 17 yo sometimes. It maybe that’s just curmudgeon-ry).
I’m taking this to a Heath thread? Poor Chris doesn’t deserve to have his thread hijacked.

Chris Hemsworth 'Taking Time Off'Well this is rather disheartening news. Chris recently discovered that has inherited two copies of a gene which makes him 8-10 times more likely to develop Alzheimer's Disease. His grandfather currently has it. He will be taking some time off from working to devote to his family and I imagine, consulting with a shit ton of doctors to determine the best course of action for him. I imagine he must be going through all sorts of feelings to be told you have a greater chance of developing this horrifying disease at some point but it's not certain whether he will or not. His grandfather having it is definitely a negative in many ways. I’ve been watching his series “Limitless” and I wondered if they delivered that news to him on camera or gave him a heads-up (the series itself has been interesting). He did talk about worrying one day he won’t remember his wife or kids. It must be really hard to watch his grandfather suffer from it and wonder, “Will this be me one day?”

23 and Me lets you know if you have this gene. My mother is preoccupied with developing/not developing Alzheimer's because she saw her grandmother suffer from it, so she paid special attention to that result.
I have friends who worry about hereditary cancers, but Alzheimer's worry seems to be particularly acute among people who have witnessed what happened to their family members.
I'm reminded of the recent Paul Newman/Joanne Woodward documentary. Joanne was preoccupied with Alzheimer's due to her family history, and thought it was virtually inevitable that she would have it too. And unfortunately, she was correct.
Famvir, I'm sorry you and your husband are dealing with that.

I also took a 23 and Me test to see if I had any genes for early-onset Alzheimer's disease. I didn't have them, but I still worry if I lose one of my few assets (memory and intelligence). With Alzheimer's, I felt like I "lost" my dad before his death almost two years ago.
My sincerest empathy for the Hemsworth family.
