I heard that duet with Elton John today on the radio - I always thought that was one of his best. Even when I hear the original version my brain inserts the words "Ladies and Gentlemen, Mr. Elton John!" at just that spot. Mine does too. It did my heart good to hear him say it today.

I'm going down a rabbit hole on You Tube, and I can't believe that I almost forgot about I Want Your Sex. I remember that my classmates and I were scandalized by this song. We rationalized that video made the song OK because it seemed to be more monogamy-focused. It's OK, kids, he wrote the word "monogamy" in lipstick on a woman's back! We were also shocked by the line "And now you tell me that you're having a baby!" from "Everything She Wants" a few years before. "He just blurts it out!"

If I'm in the car by myself, I will actually say it out loud *and* provide the roar of excitement from the crowd. In recent years I only heard about him when he was in the news for addiction-related or health-related issues, so it breaks my heart to hear all the stories trickling out of his anonymous philanthropy. What a lovely soul. At least now he's at peace, but our loss.

This one has hit me so hard. I've posted in this thread before about how I've loved George for pretty much my whole life. I've been a fan since I first saw the video for "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go" when I was nine. My first concert was seeing "The Faith Tour" with my sister at the Forum in LA. As time went by, I still thought it was one of the best concerts I've seen, and wondered if that was nostalgia talking. Then I saw George's "25 Live" tour in 2008, and realized that--nope, it wasn't nostalgia--he was a damn amazing performer. It was such a great concert: he sounded fantastic and had great energy, and we were dancing the whole time. It was George's birthday, and the entire audience sang "Happy Birthday" to him at one point. I even wrote a paper on Listen Without Prejudice for a musicology class in college. This was the mid-90s, when liking George Michael probably wasn't "cool", but I didn't care. That album is so underrated. (I got an "A" on the paper, by the way. ) I've been listening to George's music all day, and keep coming back to Listen Without Prejudice. In addition to "Freedom '90", there's "Cowboys and Angels", the gorgeous cover of Stevie Wonder's "They Won't Go When I Go", "Soul Free", and the "Waiting" reprise. So personal and powerful. And that voice... Reading all of these stories of his kindness and generosity is so moving. I hope he knew how much his music touched people, and how much he was loved by his fans. Rest in peace, dear George. And fuck off, 2016.

Thanks for reminding me about that song. I loved it when it came out. I remember we were all so scandalized when "I Want Your Sex" came out. The local radio stations would only play it so many times per day or only at night. I remember being at my friend's house when her older sister ran in all, "THEY'RE PLAYING IT" and we ran over to the radio and all sat around it with our mouths hanging open. Today it is so tame. It isn't at all raunchy, just sex-positive.

I have that on my iPod. Most top 40 music from 1987 and 1988 holds a special place in my memory and my heart.

You know, as I sat for hours Christmas night and Monday morning watching his videos on MTV Classic, that was one of his videos they didn't show. I don't know why that was. I dug out my CDs and was playing them in the car yesterday and today. Man, what a voice. Clear, strong....sigh. proper stranger- I saw him on tour both of those times as well. For the Faith tour, we were, like, third row center. I still to this day say that show was one of the top five best concerts I've seen. For the tour he did in 2008, I was in the last row of the balcony. The show started late. Weather issue. His show the previous night was in Philadelphia and there was fog (I think - can't remember). He made it, almost two hours late, and even from the last row in the balcony, it was still a fantastic show.

I wouldn't have called myself a fan (nothing against him, he just wasn't someone I particularly followed) but the article going around about all the generous donations he made anonymously just broke my heart. He seems like such a kind, fundamentally good person. Obviously he has a tremendous public legacy but it is such a testament to him that he left such a trail of giving for the sake of giving and nothing more.

But also that in today's political climate, there are plenty of people who would be all clutching their pearls and trying to get that banned from the radio.
