I would not be surprised if ratings were slipping for this show and TLC was looking for an excuse to get rid of it. I watched a few episodes and found the show boring.
This is an interesting comment. Years ago I was listening to a man on the radio speaking about this very subject. He believed this attitude started with the war in Vietnam, that most of the men who served in Vietnam were from lower socio-economic groups. Wealthier families sent their sons to Canada or college (to become teachers) so they didn't have to serve. I know so many men who told me they because teachers because "they didn't want to fight for Lyndon Johnson." Then when these young men came home, there were no parades for them; I remember seeing films of young men coming home, in their uniforms, being greeted with chants of "baby killer" from, mainly college kids. Anyway, this man on the radio said that was the beginning of the animosity for education and learning.

The topic of ignorance=humility came up at dinner last night and the general consensus was something like education after the bare minimum is considered indulgent ("getting above one's station") and possibly imperiled the economic stability of the family. An adult is/was expected to work, or attend a trade school in order to find stable profession, so pursuing education in ambiguous, unintelligible field with no direct path to work was considered both stupid and dangerous. Therefore, the more logical/humble path is to avoid unknowns like postsecondary education (besides teachjng and nursing, which were specifically mentioned) and find a job to support your family like your parents/their parents.
While this doesn't fully explain an aversion to learning in general, it's a big step along the way and I think contributes.

Interesting point chonies, and I think a lot of people feel this way now, especially that college today is so expensive. However, when I went to college in the 1970's, the attitude was, you couldn't get hired for even a basic secretarial job, in some places, unless you graduated from college, especially if you were black or Hispanic. The attitude was, "you went to college, now we know you can read and write." I read those two links about Honey Boo Boo and I really got a snooty vibe from a lot of the comments, those who were like, "I got rid of my cable..." as if a person who still had cable was illiterate and uneducated. Maybe that's why some think that ignorance=humility.

While I thought the way Mama June lived was a bit odd, I was going to give her the benefit of the doubt because she loved her children (or so I thought), and she and Sugar bear were providing a stable home. In light of this new information, I can't give her the benefit of the doubt. This is disgusting and shameful. Unless this child molester is biologically related to one of the daugthers, or he has lots of money, I can't understand why she is so drawn to him. The dating pool in those parts can't really be that shallow, right? Even if it were, go online! Heck, Sugar Bear was doing that! ETA: I don't like that SO MANY OMFG shows of Honey Boo Boo/Duck Dynasty/Call of the Wildman/Toddlers and Tiaras exist, but it seems they're here to stay. Hey, I like Call of the Wildman. Turtleman is hopelessly backwoods, but with him what you see is what you get...and he helps animals. So, it seems to never fail - whatever dirt that a reality show star has eventually comes to light. (I wonder whether TLC knew about it before the show began.) ETA2: SweetOblivion -Normally I find TMZ obnoxious, but good on them for keeping up with this story.

Everyone should keep an eye on TMZ since they keep unearthing this stuff. Pictures of Mark McDaniel making physical contact with Honey Boo Boo.I am physically sick to my stomach. June is a piece of shit who needs to have her kids taken away. TMZ said someone reported her to CPS, hopefully this picture gets to them to take action. Is this POS still swearing she hasn't had contact with the child molester?

This has descended from a mild conversation about general popular culture topics to one of the most upsetting threads I can think of in a long time.

According to the other site, June's oldest daughter Anna made the accusation of molestion against MDaniels,,but it didn't get far because June testified against her. However, another child also made accusations,,which held up, and he got 10 years in prison. That is why Anna is the one talking to the media now, because she's hurt and angry, and rightly so. Not only did her mother throw her under the bus for a man, she is back with him at the first possible opportunity.
June is not with this guy because she is lonely for companionship, she has been in a relationship with Sugar Bear for many years. Although she never seemed to like him very much (yes, I watched the show, the first couple seasons). She reunited with McDaniels the minute he was released, so clearly she is specifically attracted to him. He's obviously with her because of her TLC money and her steady supply of daughters. They are both pigs and need to be locked up.
I've always thought June was a horrible person, and never believed that she put the TLC money in trust for the kids education.

Well, now it's being reported that June was still carrying on a relationship with McDaniel even when he was in prison, and June and Sugar Bear fought over him constantly. I hope Sugar Bear is at the courthouse first thing this morning, filing for sole custody of Alana.
I've always disliked this woman, but it feels awful to be right about her in this way. I cannot imagine the pain Anna must feel looking at pictures of her mother grinning like an idiot while buying the man who molested her houses and cars, and exposing her little sister to him.

(I wonder whether TLC knew about it before the show began. I wonder about this too. If they did know, then shame on them, but I'm not surprised. Too many times have I read in the newspaper, a story about a child either hurt or killed by a step father/mother's boyfriend. Sadly June isn't the first woman, nor will she be the last, to put her own needs ahead of her children's. I hope CPS acts, but I don't have too much faith in them.
