He's 98 years old and walked out on his own after being in the hospital for 4 days, not to mention being reasonably mentally sharp still. That's fairly impressive and much more than can be said for the vast, vast majority of people at that age, if they manage to get there. I'm disheartened but not surprised that his appearance is being mocked on Twitter - how many other nonagenarians are active in public life as a frame of reference? True. But even in Weekend at Bernie's, they gave the poor man a pair of shades. I'm not saying that Philip isn't a trooper and has pushed through quite a bit for being 98 years old, but why on Earth would they let him leave the hospital looking that awful? I don't expect him to look like he had makeup and hair done, but I think he deserves a little dignity.

I thought he looked pretty good actually! I think when you are not around very elderly people on a regular basis you may not have realistic expectations of how they look and what they are physically capable of...just the fact that he walked out on his own and appears to be fully mentally cognizant is amazing for someone who is *98* years old.

What else is he supposed to do?

In my head I'm imagining him batting away the hands of people who offer a pair of sunglasses, hee.

I can't believe people expect a frail 98-year-old to look like anything but what Philip looks like. That's literally what old people look like. When I clicked on the link, I expected something much worse, but he just looks like a typical elderly man. And I don't even like him that much.
Makes me wonder if Hollywood has skewed expectations of what ageing really looks like. A constant parade of faces shellacked into expressionless submission; or surgeried/botoxed into joker grins, duck lips, and perpetual surprise.

I've wondered if he fell or something.

I'm wondering if he suffers from dementia, made worse by UTIs, which is why he needed the hospital stay and why he and The Queen seem to live two separate lives.

He seemed very with it and aware at Harry's wedding, and that wasn't that long ago.

Yeah, and he still drives on private property so seems unlikely to have dementia.

I agree with the overall points that this is pretty much what 98 looks like and it's amazing that he has, really, any mental faculties left at all. But, I also have to point out that he would NOT be the first elderly person to keep driving for years after they Really Should Not Be and given his driving history I think it might be justified to put him in that category. If anything I think the 'only driving on private property' thing makes it easier to keep any mishaps private.
