I don't mind darker, either. I thought season two with Vee and all the chaos she brought with her was pretty dark and also pretty good, so I think they can pull it off.
It looks like we get more characters, but I hope not too many. No character can truly be explored when you've got a million people in the cast.
I am looking forward to Taystee working for Caputo. The lady has brains and she just needs an opportunity to use them, and Caputo needs someone with brains helping him out.

This looks better than the last season. There's way less shots of Piper talking and more of the POC characters, so I'm looking forward to it!

Two more episodes to go! I love binging, but I miss digesting each episode and discussing it. ETA: Well, well, the last two episodes...

I'm really stunned by how the season ended. The show bounced back quite a bit from last year's stinking hot mess. It wasn't perfect, but I actually cared this year (after pretty much checking out on Season 3).

It wasn't perfect, but I actually cared this year (after pretty much checking out on Season 3). I enjoyed the relative lack of intrigue and danger in Season 3. I was dreading this season a little bit because I know what happens to prisoners when prisons are privatized and it's never good, so all the realness at the end of the season was hard to take. It was good, but it was also traumatic. Piper continues to be the least interesting character on the show. I'm fine with her storylines, but I just think she deserves a lot less screen time for those storylines, on par with the other supporting characters. I found myself wanting to see more of certain characters, such as Sophia and Lorna (although Lorna's storyline wound up not really going anywhere good).

I'm three episodes in, and here are my thoughts so far:
Lori Petty was born to play Lolly. But I'm over Donna from That 70s show and her story. I am least invested in her character, even less than Piper.
Piper is incredibly dumb and totally non threatening. Having her as this prison kingpin is unbelievable. Go read a book in the corner, Piper.
The prison corporate workers are almost catoonishly soulless and dumb. Caputo fits right in.
Lorna is such a sad character. Bragging about her prison marriage to a guy who still lives at home with his parents is pathetic. I feel sorry for her.
Still haven't seen Sophia, but I don't understand why her wife doesn't have a lawyer working on this. And where is Nicky?
what happened to Daya's baby? Is it with Pornstache's mom or foster care?

Having seen the whole season, I'm still not entirely clear on what's going on with Daya's baby. Daya was kind of ignored this season. I'm pretty sure the baby is still in foster care; Pornstache's mom is definitely out of the picture. Crystal Burset is fighting for Sophia but she's being stonewalled by the prison, who won't even admit that Sophia is in the shu.

I do like that it is becoming clearer that Lorna still just isn't quite right (in addition to being desperately lonely), and she knows that she's not quite right. But on the up side, I think the fact that she is "off" is what allows her to get along with Suzanne so well. I think they are cute together.
I couldn't remember what the deal was with Daya's baby, either. I'm sure they probably said at the end of last season that she just went to foster care, but that was one of the stories I cared the least about so I just don't remember.
