I get that blood and guts isn't for everyone and I didn't expect Bree to handle it well, but I'm glad that Claire will have someone that can help her and we get more of Marsali in the mix. I loved that she had to question Claire just one more time to make sure she wasn't a witch. Hee! Yeah, I loved that Marsali's first reaction is all, "WITCH!" but then her curiosity gets the better of her. And here's something I can't blame Bree for - not everyone is cut out for that. And I laughed when Bree knocked on the door to come in the room where Claire is doing the autopsy and Claire hastily covers the corpse's...face. Like, I get that, Claire, but I really feel like Bree was going to have more of a problem with the open abdominal cavity, as most people would. Perhaps it was Claire testing Bree to see if she could be her apprentice (Bree gave her a definite "no" by being all grossed out and going all Time Cop on her), but I still laughed. I hope they travel back (or I guess ahead?) because I am thinking Bree’s roommate she left in Boston must be wondering where she is. Hee! I haven't thought about her roommate. I know she gave Roger a letter letting him know she may not be back, but did she do the same for her roommate? Or is her roommate sitting around all, "Bitch owes me a year of back rent"?

Claire can start teaching them some basic hygiene stuff like washing their hands and proper food handling before she jumps into autopsies and penicillin making. In the books she's always encouraging people to eat more vegetables and oatmeal for their digestion.

In the books she's always encouraging people to eat more vegetables and oatmeal for their digestion. They have touched on that a little bit in the show - at least the episode where Lord John has the measles. When they find out he's sick, we see Jamie immediately go to wash his hands before heading out to Willie, so clearly Claire is at least teaching him that sort of thing. And as John was leaving, Claire advised him to eat his veggies so he'd get the proper nutrients to help him recover. They haven't hit it that hard, but I think it is one of those things that is hard to make dramatic, unlike secret autopsies.

I thought this episode was really good. It stood up on its own as a show and I think that hasn't happened in dozens of episodes!

Oh, my god. An episode that was almost completely Bree and Roger-free! And for the first 10 minutes or so, I thought we weren’t going to see them at all! The younger couple helping J&C out were Fergus and Marsali, and it was great. Though, they need to give Fergus more to do. It sucks he mostly sits on the sidelines because Rog is there.
In her one brief scene, Bree managed to annoy the piss out of me. I will start by saying something nice- her hair was super-pretty. Now the bitching - What was up with the weird, pissy look she gave Jamie before he left? I’m guessing it’s about Bonnett being alive, but Jamie doesn’t know she overheard him. Is the pissy look because she’s mad he hasn’t told her yet? Then...what a little passive-aggressive turd. If you’re mad, march up to him and say, “I heard you and Lord John talking at my wedding, when were you going to share it with me?” Don’t just give him bratty looks before he heads out on a dangerous mission. She also doesn’t say goodbye to him. Then Claire says goodbye and that it feels like when she and Frank were heading off to war and Bree is all, “This won’t result in a war!” Uh, yes it will and you know that because you’re from the future! Like, maybe not tomorrow, but your father is leaving to recruit troops. To fight. That’s often called war. God, she’s the worst.
Roger was largely inoffensive. But he looks better in a beard and should grow it back.
The rest of the episode was dark and creepy but still good. Claire is basically coming home with three new kids (at least two of them are old enough to help out, and I don’t think she’ll give the baby away - too dangerous. Is Bree still nursing? If so, she can actually be useful and be a wet nurse).
But what was up with the billions of birds at the end? I get what he said about extinct passenger pigeons in the after show, but did you need a billion of them? That had apparently been roosting completely silently before the gunfire spooked them? And if there were that many around, by all rights J&C should be coated in pigeon shit.

This show is never better than when they focus on Jamie and Claire's partnership. I love how they fully trust and rely on each other.

I really felt the show went back to its “roots” with this last episode. I enjoyed it a lot and can we stop to admire their new house? I would live there but in this century of course.

Yeah, and that's another reason why I get so offended by Bree and Roger. It's like they were all, "Well, Claire and Jamie are getting older, so we need to get a young, "sexy" couple up in here." No. No, you don't. J&C are still great.

This was a really compelling moment in the book too, they did a good job.
Can I just swim in the shallow end of the pool for a bit here and say that Sam Heughan looked totally gorgeous again this episode? They finally figured out what to do with his hair.

They must a new wig wrangler on set, because everyone is looking better hair/wig-wise. Sam did a good job episode. And as the Fug Girls pointed out in the recap for the season, he is excellent at looking at Claire like she’s the only woman in the world.
