I finally had a chance to catch up with this on Hulu and I LOVE it!! It has a ridiculous premise and yet it works! I deeply love the backstory bond between Abbie and her Sheriff and that he keeps appearing in various forms even after decapitation. Also love that John Cho's guest starring role seems to be an extended thing again, broken neck and all. Icabod's befuddlement over all things modern is adorable as were the fact that Abbie obviously took the time to help him along with post it notes. It's been said before but their chemistry is pahZOW! There's gotta be a hook up coming. I mean... I know they've established that his wife is out there somewhere, dead, alive or whatever... but I see no heat between him and Katrina. It's gotta turn out that she's just plain dead or else cheated on him with a sparrow or something so he and Abbie can hook up.... She's not 'betrothed' after all!
What I really love the most though is that they've brought George Washington's mystic/occultish ties into the plot. He was a Freemason and while that's not nearly as diabolical as the Tea Party crowd would have you believe, the fact that he belonged to a Secret Society give them a lot to play with as to what knowledge he had and may have shared with Icabod.
So, loving the flashbacks, both Abbie's and Icabod's. Plus loving that even though this is pure camp, everyone plays it dead serious. I mean Orlando Jones, usually Mr. Comedy himself, hasn't cracked a smile once throughout the whole investigation! Speaking of, I'm slightly suspicious of him- but willing to believe that he might just be the Police Captain and nothing more. (But if he turns out to be the leader of the Dark Coven, I won't be that shocked either. But more than anything, I love that his character's name is Irving!!! BWAH HA HA HA HA HA!!!! Perfect!!!! Get it? Irving? Washington Irving?....? Ok, I'll just be over here tittering quietly in pure lit nerd bliss.
All that, and genuine scares! I'm a horror buff... but a terribly JADED horror buff. It takes a lot to truly make me jump and I jumped twice in the pilot alone (That ram thingy snapping John Cho's neck then breaking the mirror in Abbie's face... good stuff!!)
Plus... More Ichabod Bod please. That man is the RWWWOARRR! Can he stumble in the shower for another episode? Umm k, thanx!
p.s. Sleepyheads.... d'awwwww!

I was talking to my mom on the phone and trying to describe this show to her. And just in the course of our conversation something came up that had not occured to me before. I was telling her about how Icabod's wife appears to him in dreams and then mentioned later that Abbie had a fantasy of talking to the Sheriff. My mom said 'Did he come to her in a dream like the wife?'... and you know... I'm not sure!
Icabod's conversations with Katrina are definitely her way of mystically imparting information to him- information he needs to know and does not know.
The Sheriff's 'chat' with Abbie could have been his spirit imparting some unknown wisdom to her. And yet, everything he said to her was something he could have said before and that was already buried in her subconscious. His suggestion that she not fear the number '49' and that it would help her- Well again, that could be his spirit giving her a clue from the beyond. But at the same time, surely she knows her sister is in Room 49, and she probably IS afraid to face that situation, but now realizes talking to her sister could be helpful. So it could be her boss/father figure acting as spirit guide... or it could be her own subconscious using him as a guide to work things out in her own head.
I really don't know... and I also LOVE that I don't know! I hope she has more 'chats' with him regardless of whether he is real or in her imagination. Katrina to her Icabod or Hobbs to her Calvin, either way- just as long as he shows up!

Chiming in to say I also am loving this show.
It was in almost every preview, but te whole "dropping the gum after firing one shot" was awesome. And I appreciate that they didn't over explain why it was funny. I like it when shows don't dumb themselves down for the viewers. So far this seems to have some smart people writing it.

Last night's episode was so creepy-good! The sandman was scary and I actually hollered when that eyeball went "poof." Love Abbie's sister, and I can't wait to see her added to the mix.

This episode was so good I wanted to watch it again immediately after it ended. This show just keeps getting better and better. I cannot wait for Jenny Mills to join the team. Girlfriend is fierce. Can't believe that's Sonya from Nikita.

I screamed when the eyeball exploded, too. Eek. The monsters on this show are pretty scary so far.
While I was expecting a more goofy, awkward Ichabod, I am loving suave, smart Ichabod. I like that they didn't go the route of having him be all backwards, racist and sexist -- he expressed surprise with seeing a black woman as a lieutenant, seeing a woman in pants, etc., but he pretty much went, "Wow, things have changed -- for the better!" and accepted it immediately. I like that he's helpful with Abbie but clearly follows her lead (ex: when she was in the house with Gillespie, he clearly wanted to rush in and try to help her, but when she put her hand up, he stayed put and let her handle things). The writers could easily have gone the route of having him see her as a damsel in distress, but he clearly doesn't, which is cool. (Although if they don't intend for people to 'ship these two like crazy, they need to have him stop being so intensely concerned about her and emphasizing that they are now linked, because ... damn, they have chemistry! It doesn't help that he looked like a kicked puppy in the first episode when he thought she was leaving Sleepy Hollow for her new job)
I like that they don't overexplain the "man out of time" jokes, too. The post-it notes explaining how the shower, coffee pot, etc., worked were too cute.

That said, I also enjoy witnessing his genuine outrage at the high taxation of baked goods and the eradication of his native friends. (Though I don't know what was up with that Shaman guy telling him there were no Powwows. I'm part Monacan and we plus other Virginia Tribes have Powwows all the time... and yes they are enjoyable... Come join us Icabod!!!)
Digging Abbie's sister and her resourcefulness. It sucks that Abbie betrayed her, but adding in the foster children element makes that seem more reasonable. She was a kid and didn't want to mess up her good thing.
I was suspicious of Captain Orlando being a baddie... and he still might be. But now he's so darned understanding and helpful. That's either because he's a good guy... Or he is a bad guy and he wants to know what they know when they know it, so now he gives them free access to finding out stuff.
I love how well rounded a character Abbie Mills is. And no one, not even the literally archaic Icabod questions her abilities as an officer of the law. There has been much talk of her 'fears'- but they've only been related to facing her past and her sister. Crazy suicidal gunman has his wife hostage and she straps on a Teflon vest and marches in without a gulp. She only got spooked when she saw the cracked mirror so similar to what the demon had done... and she still kept her cool. So for all her emotional fears, she's brave and badass when it comes to her job. How awesome.
Icabod... damn he is a pretty thang! But this really REALLY feels like the Abbie Show... and I love that they let it be!
Need more John Cho and Clancy Brown though!
