I did find Clooney's paternalism irritating and thought it lead to more 'damsel in distress' vibe than if, say, there hadn't been the mild flirty stuff between them.
I really enjoyed the movie and think it might Bullock's finest work. The one part that bugged me was the plot part that I found tired and predictable. I can't figure out how to do spoilers anymore, but anyone who saw it knows what I mean.

Loved this movie. Amazing visuals (that opening shot!) and I have never heard an audience so quiet in my life as they were during some of the silent scenes. I usually think 3D is a gimmicky ripoff, but it really added something here. Sandra was great and I thought her presence added real humanity and warmth to the movie. I didn't find the Clooney character paternalistic. Like kostgard said, I saw him more as the "wise-cracking, experienced old guy" on the mission. Agree with everyone that it was so refreshing to a story centered around a female lead. When I saw this, all the trailers before the movie were for more movies about older white dudes blowing stuff up/acting like jackasses. When Sandra's character *spoiler* (don't know how to add the little button) {Spoiler}said that her daughter's name was Sara, I wondered if that was a little tip of the hat to Cuaron's "A Little Princess", which is still a favorite of mine.

I'm trying not to spoil myself but I'm hearing mixed reviews about this after a lot of initial hype. Worth a full price ticket or matinee (or VOD)? Is it sort of slow like 2001 or Solaris? TIA.

Worth a matinee, because you should really see it on the big screen. It isn't slow - it moves along pretty quickly and it is only 90 minutes long, so it doesn't drag out forever. The script is really pretty bare-bones -- the story isn't all that deep, it isn't like it is chalk full of amazing dialogue, and the story is pretty darn straightforward - not a lot of twists and turns. It's mostly a visual movie, but it is visually stunning.
If you go in looking for a complex, meaty story you will be disappointed. If you are expecting a straightforward action film with a bare bones story but amazing visuals, you'll like it.

I've also heard that you really do need to see it in IMAX or 3D. A good friend of mine saw it and said it was fine but she wasn't as blown away as everyone else seemed to be, but she said she only saw the standard version. I'm thinking about going this weeekend.

I definitely recommend springing for the IMAX 3D, I hate paying extra for 3D but it's so worth it for this one.

I just saw this and it was my first film to see in IMAX 3D. I thought the effects were awesome! The movie was definitely beautiful to watch. I thought Sandra did a great job, but even though I enjoyed the film overall, I was left feeling cold at the end... I dunno.

I loved it. I'm a bit of a curmudgeon about 3D, but I thought it was worth it for this movie. Both leads were amazing, but it's Sandra's movie, and she OWNS it. I'd start clearing some room on my mantel if I were her.

It was pretty meh for me. Looked great but I found myself unmoved by the characters and rolling my eyes at the dialogue.
