Nymphomaniac (also stylized as Nymph()maniac) is an upcoming two-part drama film written and directed by Lars von Trier. Starring Charlotte Gainsbourg, Stellan Skarsgård, Shia LaBeouf, Jamie Bell, Christian Slater and Connie Nielsen, a cut version of the film is set to be released on December 25, 2013 in Denmark. The uncut, 5 hour version will not be released until sometime in 2014.
Premise and Plot Structure
NYMPH()MANIAC is the wild and poetic story of a woman's erotic journey from birth to the age of 50 as told by the main character, the self-diagnosed nymphomaniac, Joe (Charlotte Gainsbourg). On a cold winter's evening the old, charming bachelor, Seligman (Stellan Skarsgård), finds Joe beaten up in an alleyway. He brings her home to his flat where he tends to her wounds while asking her about her life. He listens intently as Joe over the next 8 chapters recounts the lushly branched-out and multi faceted story of her life, rich in associations and interjecting incidents.
As previous Lars von Trier's films, the story is presented in chapters. This two-part film is divided into 8 chapters, each with its own back story:

Pre-production
Producer and Zentropa co-founder Peter Aalbæk Jensen revealed that the film is to be two parts. "We are making two films. It is a big operation. I personally hope that we should be ready for Cannes next year. We will shoot both and edit both – and we want to finish both at the same time.” He explained there will be two versions of each film: an explicit cut and a softer cut.
LaBeouf said in August 2012 that, "The movie is what you think it is. It is Lars von Trier, making a movie about what he's making. For instance, there's a disclaimer at the top of the script that basically says we're doing it for real. Everything that is illegal, we'll shoot in blurred images. Other than that, everything is happening. ... [V]on Trier's dangerous. He scares me. And I'm only going to work now when I'm terrified."
Filming
Filming took place between August 28 – November 9, 2012 in Cologne and Hilden, Germany, and in Belgium.
To produce scenes of unsimulated sex, Von Trier is having the genitals of porn actors digitally composited onto the bodies of the film's cast.
Marketing
In early 2013, the first teaser poster was released from the film's official website. A few weeks later, Zentropa released a promotional photo shoot with the film main characters posing in suggestive positions and a list of the film's chapters.
A picture of Lars himself with duct tape in his mouth was released shortly after, with a press release explaining the official launch of the film's campaign.
To promote the film and to give more information about the plot, each month in a newspaper around the world an 'Appetizer' was released; this appetizer consisted of a film clip, a movie still and a brief description of the chapter.
On June 28th, the appetizer for 'The Compleat Angler' was released. Later on July 26th, 'Jerôme' was unlocked but the film still was made available only on the official website because of its explicit content. On August 30th, 'Mrs. H' hit the web and the film clip was presented in a different ratio aspect from the others. On September 27th, 'Delirium' was released with a film clip containing a voice over by Stellan Skarsgard reading an excerpt of The Fall of the House of Usher by Edgar Allan Poe. On October 10th, a set of 14 character posters was released through the film's official website. Later on November 1st, the appetizer for 'The Little Organ School' was uploaded to YouTube but was quickly removed due to its explicit content. On November 29th, 'The Eastern and the Western Church' was released exclusively for Vimeo.
So far, along with the appetizers and the character posters, 2 theatrical one sheets and a red band trailer have been released.
