Fats Domino Missing in New OrleansThe terrible, cynical person in me thinks those vultures on the entertainment news programs will eat this up. (I'm looking directly at you, Entertainment Tonight) He's one of those singers that I probably couldn't name a song he does, but would recognize his voice once I heard it.

I could maybe only name five of his songs but he's just great. That's so sad to hear about him.

I normally consider myself pretty abreast of my pop stars both past and present, but I had no idea Fats was still alive. When I saw the headline earlier today that he was missing, I honestly thought it meant his casket had washed out of a graveyard or something. Glad he's okay, though!

I'm glad he's alright but I have to vent my anger at him and the others down there who refused to follow the mandatory evacuation rules. Unlike lots of others who were legitimately stranded in the city, he had the means to leave but chose not to.
I know hindsight is 20/20 but I have to believe New Orleans authorities would not have ordered a wholesale evacuation if they didn't have just cause to worry. People like Fats, who assumed they knew better, are forcing rescue workers to risk their own lives to save theirs and are placing an undue burden on an already-taxed relief effort. I truly grieve for the victims of the hurricane but I have little sympathy for those who are victims of their own stupid actions.
Sorry if this sounds harsh but I'm really annoyed by that kind of behaviour.

Actually, from what I've read, a lot of people weren't able to get out. Transportation out of the city (bus lines, trains, etc) was CANCELLED, some people don't have cars (NO, apparently, is like NYC, not a "car town"), people who couldn't afford to leave (poor, handicapped, large families), too little notice, or just have been told too many times in the past to LEAVE and nothing happened.
Okay, that being said, topic? I didn't know Fats was still alive either. Ain't that a shame? (ducks flying tomatoes)

Guin, that's what I meant by "legitimately stranded"...people who couldn't get out, not who purposely chose to stay.
But back to topic, I also had no idea he was still alive. I wonder how many other entertainers of his generation are still kicking around but keeping a low profile.

Ah, I see. Yeah, some of them were just stubborn. From what I gather, NO has had tons of warnings like this before-then nothing. Some of them were idiots, though.
I hope his family is safe. It would be awful to survive something like that-and then learn your family didn't.

One of my dearest friends is from NO and apparently there was never a mandatory city-wide evacuation like this before, just the usual advisories. That's why I think this should have been taken more seriously. But what do I know, I am colossally stubborn myself so who knows what I would have thought under the circumstances.
Wasn't his wife and daughter supposed to be with him in the house? I recall hearing that but no news on their whereabouts as of yet. I couldn't imagine it. Fortunately my friend and her family are all fine, riding things out in Texas, but I was very worried waiting for her phone call. It must be a nightmare for families right now.
