That sounds familiar to me, too, but I can't place it. Man, I would love to get my cabinets done in the kitchen, but it is strictly cosmetic, so it's backburned (heh) for now. I just got my dishwasher replaced (that WAS a necessity) and next on my list is a new bathroom vanity. Then maybe I'll revisit the cabinets (if nothing else comes up before that).

Re waste, try to salvage and reuse or donate anything you can.
I also get annoyed at all the waste on home shows. They just HAVE to get the ubiquitous "demolition porn" shot and it seems like oftentimes that means the kitchen cabinets are gonna take an unnecessary beating. Cabinets can be taken down and added to a garage or basement! If the homeowners can't use them, someone probably could.

There are lots of ReStores (from Habitat for Humanity) where good used home reno items can be donated.
My old cabinets were a Danish modern from the 80s with a golden oak finish. My brother took them, sanded them down, and painted them white. New handles and counters, and a new configuration and my cabinets are still doing their thing. And my brother got free cabinets.

The Habi Store is so much fun to wander through, but it always makes me a little sad knowing that by the time I have a home that I can remodel everything I like will be gone. Renting is a downer that way.

I know - I HATE seeing them smashing up those cabinets just because they don't like the color/finish. Our neighborhood also has a reuse store, and I found a set of the exact 1920's light fixtures that are in my house, just a different color. There were originally four upstairs in my house - one in the hall and one in each bedroom, but one has been replaced. I'm going to swap out the different color one for the hallway and have original fixtures again. (Maybe that should have been on my NY resolution list as well :-))
Also a local stone cutting place around here will give you a 20% discount if you re-use an old counter slab. I had friends who had replaced a granite countertop, so I had them cut it down to top the little cabinets next to my pedestal sink in the bathroom.

I redid my kitchen 3 years ago (total gut job, heh, but it was old) and put in blue cabinets. I was ahead of the trend! They're a deep slate blue; my alternative would have been black. I get lots of compliments. My daughter recently put in kitchen cabinets that are lawn green with gold handles. Looks great, although I'm not a fan of the resurgence of gold and brass. Still seems too '80s to me. I'm irritated by Love It or List It or House Hunters houses that are now gut-jobbing kitchens that are barely 10 years old. And they act so repulsed by them. Plus, it's so wasteful. Thank you!!! We have an eleven year old kitchen. Everything is in good shape: high-quality cabinets, granite, tile floors. Everywhere I look, designers are trashing brown cabinets and busy granite. It is like their number one kitchen faux pas. I would love quartz and a lighter kitchen -- because it looks a bit like a cave but kitchen reno is expensive and time-consuming. And what we have works really well. It killed me when Orlando Sorio went into a house with our exact type of granite and acted like it was tacky beyond belief. Kitchen trends are changing quicker than ever and designers don't seem to understand that most people can't drop 25 grand to change finishes, simply because designers are constantly changing "what is in" just to generate content and make money.

Mugsy, I think a deep blue like that would be gorgeous! @borokat, is painting/ staining the cabinets a possibility? Maybe a light glaze to lighten up the cabinets? I think there's a thing called refacing where they just replace the doors. If the layout is still functional and the cabinets are in good condition, it would seem like there has to be a way to lighten them up to extend their life.

I am intrigued by a glaze. Right now they are mahogany, which isn't bad at all - I like mahogany, but I think I like mahogany a little too much. There's a lot of brown in my house. I have been de-browning for the last two years.

I have been de-browning for the last two years. My mom was a big, big fan of brown. Brown carpet, brown drapes, brown car. I find it comforting! One of the restaurants that I used to work in did a massive remodel one time and there was a HUGE amount of wood paneling that ended up getting a glazing treatment to make it look sort of pickled, but you might be able to get a finish you like with the wax that is used with chalk paint - it sounds like you're pretty happy with the cabinets you'd just like something lighter. A little tweak. And mahogany is GORGEOUS so I'm very jealous!
