So far it's not as good as Season One (although, the ending of S1 sucked, IMHO) but I am still quite enjoying it. I like that LA noir genre and I'm loving Rachel McAdams. Plus, Taylor is pretty.

Best episode so far. This season is finding its feet at last. The three lead detectives are interacting and that was a great shootout at the end.
Vince Vaughn is also much more believable as a broke and desperate gangster than he is as a wannabe investment big shot.

I was kind of half paying attention when the shootout started and didn't see what brought it about. Can someone fill me in?
I agree that Vince Vaughn was much better this episode.

The detectives found video footage of Caspere's belongings being pawned. The woman pawning them belonged to a pimp named Amarilla. The detectives and Vaughn know that Amarilla is likely not the mastermind of the murder, but they needed to bring in him for questioning. As the squad prepared to take him down, someone began firing on them from a building window. Upon firing back, an entire floor of the building exploded and Bezzarides realized it was probably a meth house. Then it became a total massacre, with Amarilla and all of his men killed, many of the cops and some bystanders all killed. The three lead detectives were the only survivors.
ETA: I'm not positive if it was really a meth house or if Amarilla's posse was just destroying evidence.

I think the question is who set them up to search Amarilla's property?
That was a harrowing shootout to watch. And has now got me much more interested in the storyline. Good job, writers.

The shootout definitely made me perk up. But I admit, I am SO confused half the time. I think I need to rewatch the first 4 episodes again before Sunday.

Same here. Great for the shootout, it was the one thing I could follow. I have no idea what's going on and rely on salon & av club to explain stuff later on. Also, everyone has names that sound really...fictional? Like, no one's named Smith or Johnson. Which is fine, I just can't remember any of them.
One unpopular opinion: I don't mind Kitsch's angst over being in the closet, esp. as a cop/vet. Some writers have said this is unrealistic in LA in 2015, as if homophobia has disappeared suddenly and the world is all peace and love about same-sex relationships. I DID think his proposal was the worst ever and extremely convenient though. And in general I don't mind gritty, dark tableaus (see: Hannibal et al).

Thank you babyfishmouth (when will they remake THAT movie?). I did the same thing as prisma, and had to remind back to the beginning of the shootout to figure out why they were, er, shooting out.
Did Taylor wake up with the ex-soldier boyfriend? Or was that some random guy? Or one of the prostitute guys?
I just have no clue what's going on, and I REALLY don't know why Vince and the Girlfriend are discussing babies.

I'm pretty sure that was a male prostitute or just some random dude he met at the club where all the prostitutes were hanging out. Vince wants an heir to leave his business/fortune to, so he wants a kid.

I read that Taylor woke up with the same guy he'd punched in the face earlier (I guess anything's possible when you're blackout drunk?). The soldier buddy.
Although I'm not overall impressed with the dialogue, I liked the bit about Vince not wanting adoption and 'doing someone else's time.' Although I'm not sure they're only just now discussing alternatives? And what's happening with the wife that she's scared it's her fault they can't conceive? I dunno, too many questions for one ep...
