While I like they layout, I'm surprised to see WingChun as a mod. I kind of had the impression she was one of the main problems. Why do they continue moderating these sites? Sorry if I'm behind the times on who runs it. I hadn't been paying close attention. WingChung (Tara Ariano) is a Mighty Big TV/TWOP/Fametracker founder (Sarah Bunting (Sars) and David T. Cole (Glark) are the other two). So if this p.TV is from the OG creators, like I have been hearing, then it's her site.

My point is that they seem to have problems keeping these sites open for the long haul. I don't know the specific reasons, but it's kind of amusing that they keep reopening these sites under new names. It seems like setting oneself up for inevitable failure.

I think they did pretty well all things considered.
Dawson's Wrap/MBTV/TWOP was under their management for a decade or thereabouts, which isn't bad considering it started as a place for Wing and Sars to recap and make fun of Dawson's Creek. Then they got popular and expanded and changed the name to reflect the fact that they weren't just recapping DC anymore. They had to change the name from MBTV because they were getting legal notices from another website with a similar name.
Things only went to crap when they sold the site to Bravo - though I can see why they did sell it. They paid their recappers but didn't want to charge for content, so money was often tight. Bravo gave them better financial security and promised them creative freedom. That seemed great, they got offices at 30 Rock and Wing and Glark relocated from Canada, then suddenly the founders were out. I don't know if they quit or if Bravo got rid of them. But love them or hate them, they ran the site well and the quality really went to shit after they left. The recaps were riddled with errors that an editor should have caught and they were painfully unfunny as the original crew of recappers left and were replaced by people who clearly didn't understand the concept of a TWOP-style recap. And the forum mods were clearly just crazy troll people.
I know I sound like a huge apologist or something, but I actually thought they pulled off something kinda cool once upon a time and it was something that clearly couldn't survive without them. I mean, yes, the Internet has changed and people have more choices and seek out different content, but I really think TWOP's closure has more to do with the way Bravo turned it to crap more than anything else.

People who are good at getting startups off the ground use this model, too. But they had a good run. Mighty Big TV/TwoP really grew exponentially during the time they were running it, and they got some nice book deals out of the Fametracker website. Their sites also might have had an impact on Sars and Wing getting jobs at MSNBC, and I know for sure that they got freelancer work from editors who checked out their sites. Running a site like that can work as a giant resume sometimes. Plus, the fab three run solid websites for the most part, it's just that in the past WingChung could be a jerk sometimes to the plebs who frequented her sites. Compared to some of the people who followed her after the Bravo buyout, she wasn't that bad, hah. Just occasionally eye-roll worthy.

I guess I'm looking at it from a perspective that, if I'm a business owner and looking for a new opportunity, then I move to something new. Not continually recreate the same thing. I think Previously TV is fine. I remember all the old founders, but I also remember that they could be dicks about things too. I don't think it was just the Bravo people, although it went to Hell after that takeover.

Oh yeah, I hear you. It's just seems to be something that happens in certain industries. You see it all the time in the world of journalism, too. And chefs and restaurant investors do the same thing throughout their careers, constantly starting things up, then either going under or building up a chain to sell.
That assessment of TWOP before/after Bravo sounds about right to me.

Ugh, knowing that they are there is enough to make me stay away. Yes, they (Damn Hell Ass Kings or whatever the F) created some cool content. But the attitude, snobbery and basic unpleasantness was straight-up absurd. There just was not much call to be so assy to people. I'm glad some peeps have found some good stuff at the new site, though.

I remember when things were getting kind of crazy there, which was when I decided to abandon TWOP. It wasn't just about the founders selling it. The founders kind of had attitude problems. However, they seem fine on Previously TV. We shall see.

Hipster snobbery is totally over. Humble normcore is totally the new thing.
