I tried to read the book but couldn't get into GF's writing style, so I went in unspoilered. I really enjoyed it but as it settles in I'm just thinking, really? She's just demented, roll credits? What am I missing?

The way it builds in the book, that *is* the revelation, along the quietly stifling horror of being married to someone like Amy. Or Nick, for that matter.

I kind of hated this movie. I felt like I was watching a really good crime show combined with a mediocre lifetime movie. I enjoyed the crime show, but started hating it when the lifetime movie kicked in. By the last 30 minutes or so there was no semblance of reality. Things got downright stupid when Amy was shown in the hospital and then going home with blood still over her. At that point it's like what.ever. I doubt the media would fall for Amy's game, and even if they did, the internet certainly wouldn't. She wouldn't have the power and control over Nick or the authorities that the movie implied. If there's a sequel and Amy is further investigated, the last part of the movie will be more understandable, but it's still pretty annoying the way the credits suddenly rolled and left things in their ridiculous, unbelievable state. It just felt like a waste of time.

Yes, hah! I think I posted here after seeing it that I felt like I was watching some super campy made for TV movie. I didn't get the Oscar buzz or people talking about this movie like it was smart and plot twisty. The audience I was with was laughing and shaking their heads the whole time. It felt really dated, and once I got into a cheesy movie mindset I could totally predict everything that was going to happen.
I had fun laughing at it, but I think if I let it sit in my brain too long I start thinking about how misogynist it is. It's apparently popular with the Men's Rights crowd, so that right there tells me something about it.

I thought both the book and the movie were stupid. Amy lied about being pregnant, right? Well, when she came back after claiming she'd been raped, you'd have to see a doctor, have gynecological exam right? Wouldn't that doctor be able to tell if you were ever pregnant?

I believe a doctor would only be able to tell if you had ever given birth, not whether or not you had ever be pregnant, hence the "how many pregnancies/live births" questions on ladies' health inventories.

Added me to the "hated it" club except for Doogie's lake house of which I am moving in.
Now for a potentially unpopular opinion: who told Rosamund Pike she could act? Yeah she got nominated for an Oscar and all, but everything I see her in, be it contemporary or period piece, she's wooden with a wide doe-eyed look. It should have worked for her psycho character in Gone Girl, but not really.

Her and NPH were the most WTF parts of this movie for me. They were both terrible. Ben Affleck was perfect for his character. This movie's plot is why I hate fiction.

Oh sweet Xenu that lake house...Doogie even took the viewers on a tour of it in the movie to show off all its amenities.
Gotta love real estate porn. It reminds me of a comment I read once about the horrible Jaime Foxx/Colin Farrell movie Miami Vice. One of the guys was having sex in the shower and the commenter thought the movie was so boring but holy hell, did that shower have some amazing tiles!
