Anyone seen David Tennant and Anna Gunn's new show, which started last night? I haven't yet but it's a loose remake of the British Broadchurch, which I loved. Fox.com/Gracepoint

It's not a loose remake, so far it's an exact remake other than being set in America (but filmed in Canada) instead of Britain.
Which isn't bad; I saw Broadchurch and thought it was a great capture of how a murder affects everyone in a small town.
It had a very realistic and difficult-to-watch scene of grief. Often people on TV and in movies react to an announcement of death like their hamster died, they look mildly shocked and then start casually talking about whodunnit or what do we do now. But in real life, grief is raw and ugly, and Gracepoint showed that.

Fwiw, the first two episodes use the same scripts, but after that they start to diverge. Gracepoint has a different ending and a couple of extra or different subplots.

Last night I was getting pretty annoyed while watching because it was line for line, shot by shot copy of Broadchurch! Nice to hear the American version will have it's own twist on it.

I haven't seen the first ep yet (it's on my DVR, waiting for me tonight) but I saw Broadchurch. I'm also pleased the American version will get its own ending, just for fun. I also hope the townspeople are more likeable. In the British version I had a hard time sympathizing with much of anyone because the people ranged from annoying to awful.

I loved the original and in spite of myself liked the pilot of Gracepoint, for sentimental reasons. I'm interested in any US differences as this first ep seemed to be Broadchurch with crappier accents (I was a Brit in a former life). Tennant's natural accent is so wasted here...

I watched it only because it was filmed in my husband's small hometown, Sidney (north of Victoria on Vancouver Island). It's silly of us, because we live in Los Angeles and I always see stuff I know locally on TV, but it was cool to see his locale for a change.

I fell asleep watching the first episode. I'm glad to hear Tennant doing a better American accent--in the first couple of clips he sounded like he was doing a Batman impersonation.

I decided to watch the premiere of season 2 of Broadchurch without having watched the first season, and it seems like Gracepoint ended in the same way. The only difference might be, though I'm not sure, that the viewers aren't aware of the involvement of the victim's friend. Am I right? I'm also confused about the legal system in the UK as it's being portrayed. Was the not guilty plea surprising because it was assumed that the defendant would plead guilty in this particular case, or is it generally surprising for a defendant to plead not guilty, which would be the opposite of the US. Also, what's up with choosing the prosecutor? I don't understand that aspect either. Anyway, good show on either side of the pond. I can't say I prefer either version.

At the end of Broadchurch is was pretty clear that Joe was guilty and Tom wasn't involved at all. That's how Gracepoint could say they changed the ending. If they go back and involve Tom at this point, it would be surprising and annoying to me.
The Not Guilty verdict was a shock because Joe confessed. Everyone seemed to figure this hearing would be the end of it but now there will be a trial.
