Man, Netflix has spoiled me with being able to binge watch entire series and putting out new series all at once. I don't handle it well when a new, non-Netflix show comes about that airs once a week and only once a week. 'Cause damn it, there's only two more days until the next Empire, but I'm already in deep withdrawal. Enough to go into full Andre off his meds mode! Girlyghoul needs her Cookie fix, y'all!!
I love this show! It's such a bad soap- but with great music and a phenomenal wardrobe and hair department! I love all the random art in the background. I love all the bowls of candy or nuts that seem to be sitting around everywhere and that everyone will chomp on them to make some dramatic point. I love the odd structure where a thought could turn into a flashback, or a flashback could turn into a music video, or a press conference could suddenly help finish a song, or a banished son could suddenly pop up on stage in a spotlight (yeah, was no earthly time for the roadies and lighting people to have rehearsed that change up or even anticipated it... But so what? Cue happy gasps and angry candy chomps. Boo ya!)
But what great TV! BJ Bibs! Broom Beatdowns! Drunken blabberings that go viral! Elevator smackdowns that ironically DON'T get recorded! US Presidents taking the time to cuss out Hip Hop moguls! Bodyguards swimming with the fishes... in just the pilot episode! Girlyghoul wants more Girlyghoul tells ya!!
Luscious is such a horrible, horrible person... and I LOVE him! He's like JR Ewing or Monty Burns levels of evil... but the more diabolical he gets, the more I can't wait to see what he'll do next!
Hakeem is awful in a different, less lovable way. He's like what you would get if Justin Bieber's ego and Jaden Smith's entitlement got together and pooped out a baby. And yet, when he makes music with Jamal he's suddenly some kind of wonderful, and ya gotta root for him... at the same time you hope Cookie keeps her broom handle handy.
And Cookie, of course, is the best. I started to think it was a little odd that she has so much knowledge of the current world (pop culture, technology, etc.) when she's been locked up for nearly two straight decades. And yet, I can completely believe that if anyone would find a way to stay current- it would be Cookie. I wonder who or what she's supposed to testify about. I think it'll turn out to be something deeper than Luscious and his shady dealings and cousin killing ways.
The only thing I don't like is that this show is on FOX. I don't trust the network execs to leave it alone and just let it be awesome... But so far so good. (Yeah SOOOO Good!!)

I go back and forth between Luscious being JR and Cookie being JR. (I'm telling people that this show is like Dallas, but with brown people, but I think I need to tweak my description. It doesn't quite capture the sheer awesome) The show runners better not fuck this up like they did Sleepy Hollow. |

I hesitated to watch this show because of Terrence Howard, and I was SO happy to realize he's playing someone I can freely and completely detest. I have to hand it to the actor. Hakeem is SUCH a little douche rocket 95% of the time, but the 5% of the time when he's being sympathetic/decent, I buy it. In fact, I think all three of the sons are really interesting characters. I'm really interested to see where they go with Andre's mental illness. |

The show runners better not fuck this up like they did Sleepy Hollow. This is what I fear the most. Even though these are very different shows, I think the last time I got this excited about a new show WAS Sleepy Hollow... and if you watch Sleepy Hollow at all you know how well that all turned out. The fact these shows are on the same network worries me. But in the mean time, I will bask in the current awesome! As for Jamal and his 'outness' with the tattoo and all... Well, you know what the most AWESOME storyline would be (And since it's FOX, I'm not sure they would go in this direction) But if they had a whole episode devoted to Cookie's insisting that Jamal come out for the publicity that will give him (really HER) the edge over Hakeem while Luscious spins himself into a total candy chomping frenzy trying to keep Jamal from coming out. And after much family strife, screaming, hair pulling, wig snatching, table flipping, broom breaking and destruction or near destruction of all the involved characters (except Jamal)- the kid comes out... and the public at large is all: "Meh. We knew. When's the next single dropping?" BWAH HA HA HA!!! Jamal is relieved, happy, validated... while the rest of the family is left in shambles from the toll that trying to make (or prevent) this outing took on them. And speaking of Jamal in general- he seems like the one genuine person in the group. He's not out for fame or money (beyond the lifestyle his Daddy had provided him so far) He seems to just love his music for the music's sake and want to live quietly and happily with his sweetie out of the spotlight. But at the same time- he comes from scheming, backstabbing, ruthlessly ambitious stock. Is he the true black sheep of the family who will always be content as long as he has his piano... Or is there a ruthless, scheming snake hiding coiled in his heart ready to strike out and destroy his enemies and family (same thing in this case) in a way that no one- not even Cookie would see coming. It'll be interesting to find out. Don't screw this up FOX! |

It would be impossible to whitewash this show like they have Sleepy Hollow. I'm sure Fox would try, but ultimately it wouldn't stick. Kinda hard to promote the white characters when the entire basis of the show is a black family in the music business with all the pitfalls and successes of that particular group of people. Eh, I could be naive. Who would have thought they'd stick with Katrina/Abraham/Henry/Hawley on Sleepy Hollow this long, seeing how the ratings have plummeted?
