I haven't seen the movie yet, but I'm already rolling my eyes, and booing in my head at this turn of events. Where was this alleged spark in Avengers I? The scene with them in India? In that cabin? What?! Are they on crack? I've seen Avengers multiple times, and not once, did I think there was enough chemistry to put Black Widow with the Hulk. Widow and Hawkeye? Obviously. Captain? Sure. Loki? Possibly. Ugh. I need the head-banging smiley back. I actually saw a clip of BW calming Hulk down in the new movie. She's his "connection" to his humanity, and can snap him out of Hulk mode with tender touches and coy smiles. I almost threw up in my mouth. This one is going to wait a bit before I see it. I knew it was going to be a downgrade, but with this level of fuckery? No thanks. And that wasn't even the worst of it. I rolled my eyes quite a bit with them. It was so clunky and ridiculous. It actually pissed me off when I found out Ruffalo wrote to Whedon asking for the romance. Umm, you have Betty Ross, why are you trying to hijack the Widow? That's not to say it wasn't a good movie. I truly enjoyed it, but that bullshit was just too much. Especially when you see what the Russo brothers did for Natasha in Winter Soldier. ETA: Actually Hawkeye's family came from one of the comic versions, but it's so obscure very few people knew about it. Everyone assumed they'd go with Hawkeye & Mockingbird, but they put her on AoS and paired her with another character. What's really bothering is, the romance angle wasn't needed at all in these movies. It's okay to forego the googly-eyes, and tortured/doomed love story crap in these movies. This ain't Twilight. Girls will still go see your movies even if there isn't heart eyes, and fancy clothes. Some of us like fights, intrigue, snappy dialogue, big damn explosions, and comic book mythos. We can live without twu wuv to get us through the credits. I liked the Pepper cameo, and Jane mention in the first one. That was sufficient. Avengers isn't supposed to be about the heroes personal lives, it's supposed to be about them coming together to take on the big bad. I'm so disappointed, and I haven't even seen the movie yet.

Yeah, I was spoiled for it going in, but I was still going and it's worth it. While not perfect, it's still a fun team movie. But they could and should have done without the personal stuff. Not interested. Do what I did. I saw it Saturday morning. Paid $7. Got my money's worth.

I really feel like Whedon needs to call the people who wrote Captain America and Agent Carter -- to me, the Steve/Peggy love story is a great example of how romantic storylines can fit in and enrich these movies. It's about the only one where it seems to enhance both characters and the narrative. The follow up in Winter Soldier and the Agent Carter TV series was so sad! I'm not categorically against romance in any of these movies, when it's done right. So I don't really have a problem with Ruffalo asking for things, because at the end of the day it was Whedon who shit the bed writing and directing it.

But those storylines were in individual movies/tv shows. Avengers is an ensemble piece. Leave your personal lives at home. Ugh. I just watched Winter Soldier again the other night, and it was so good. The romance stuff was peripheral at best. Little pieces dropped in here and there. But it was Captain and Black Widow firing on all cylinders. If Ruffalo wanted a romantic angle for his character, he should have asked for a solo movie.

If Ruffalo wanted a romantic angle for his character, he should have asked for a solo movie. Exactly. TBH, none of their personal lives should come into play in the ensemble pieces. There's just too many moving parts for that. That said, I'll probably be seeing it again on Friday. Can we talk about Paul Bettany and his amazing body. Hot damn, Jennifer Connolly is a lucky woman.

The first movie had plenty of "personal stuff" though -- I don't see where a romantic storyline is inherently more out of place than Stark and Banner's bromance or Tony's issues with Steve or Thor and Loki's family drama. I don't think a romance should be mandatory and I appreciate that it was averted in some of Marvel's other movies, but I don't see it as some inherently unforgiveable thing to attempt. This is obviously a YMMV though!
And I mean... we all know the Hulk's not getting a third try at a solo movie anytime soon. More importantly, just because Ruffalo asked didn't mean anybody had to say yes. Downey had requests for the first movie that got shot down so I don't believe Feige/Whedon are in the business of rolling over.

What I got from the first Avengers movie with Black Widow and the Hulk was a deep FEAR on her part. The camera seemed to stay on her for few more beats when she faced the Hulk. Like this was a danger she couldn't talk or fight her way out of. Can't believe I misinterpreted that fear for lust.
Edited to add, I wouldn't mind more personal stuff if it involved a shirtless Cap.

Oh man. I just saw it. I can't believe Joss Whedon turned that in to the studios, and they let that be shown in theaters. That was bad. Shockingly bad. It was a mess. All my horror at Black Widow/Hulk, has been dwarfed by the incoherent mess of a "plot". I am slack-jawed at what I just witnessed. For the last half hour, I didn't even try to follow along, I just let it wash over me. I didn't get Ultron's plan with the Vibranium nuke. Why did he have to lift the city? Where did all the robots come from? How did they blow up the bomb without killing billions? How was Ultron defeated if he can go anywhere, and download himself to the internet? Where was half the team, half the time? Thor's side project was what now? How did Pietro and Wanda get a change of clothes at Tony's house? Tony's shoes, shirts, and (I guess Pepper's jacket) fit them perfectly? I know that's nitpicky, but that scene was so weird and out of place. The action scenes were passable at best. The zippy dialogue was gone. I laughed at one exchange. Exactly one. When Jarvis picked up the hammer. As I'm sitting here typing this, the movie is already leaving my brain. I can barely remember scenes I saw an hour ago. This was such a letdown/downgrade. Iron Man II levels of badness. Terrible followup Joss. Too many moving parts, and not enough focus.

The only ones to interpret that as lust were Ruffalo and Whedon. Scarlett didn't see and was confused when she got the script. Even Renner was...I was confused by Hulk and Black Widow and stuff. Babycakes, sorry you hated it.
