It's baaaaaaaack!!!
I grew up watching this show and even as a kid, I knew it was a cheese-fest. In my 20s, I looked back and wondered why I ever watched it. And yet now in my 30s, I enjoyed watching the first ep of Fuller House. While it is far, far from being Emmy-nominated, it's comforting to watch, damnit! Most of the actors have barely aged (John Stamos and Lori Loughlin must have hideous portraits in their attics), the set is more or less the same, and most importantly, the cheese-fest dialogue and storylines remain.
Talk about the new show, talk about the original show!

The reviews are hilarious:
Sounds reasonable! This show is more provocative than anything actually trying to be controversial. I'm a fan of it just for that.

That's literally how long I lasted until my secondhand embarrassment made me turn it off.

My sister, mother, and I all convened to watch this show yesterday. We unapologetically spent yesterday and today binge-watching all 13 episodes in a nostalgia haze. And, yep, it was cheesy as hell. I will say that the jokes and clothing (particularly Stephanie's) are racier than the original show. Full of derivatives and parallels to the original, but us girls just said, "Fuck it." That especially held true when we saw John Stamos because, damn, he looks better than he did in the original run.
The original was weekly appointment viewing in our house. When "Full House" premiered, my sister was Michelle's age, I was D.J.'s age, and I think my Mom thought the show would be good for us somehow. She was wrong.

I know it isn't for me. My mom watched it back in the day because she thought Stamos was cute. I watched it with her until Michelle started talking, then it made me want to stab someone. I hate cutesy TV kids. "You got it, dude!" Jesus. Go play in traffic, kid.

When I married my husband and became a stepmom, my stepdaughter was almost six. I was intent on being The Best Stepmom Ever, and I tried to find anything to help us bond. So, we watched Full House, and we all looooooved it. Around the same time, The Aristocrats came out, and mr narm and I developed mad love for Bob Saget. My steppie loved the show, so I bought the DVDs and we watched the show constantly. Mr narm and I would smirk, but we eventually loved it for so many reasons. Recently, our two youngest discovered the reruns, and they love it too. Now, my steppie is a beautiful young lady (teenager) and can hardly be bothered by us, especially on the weekend. But on Friday night, she was all, you guys GOTTA see this, and queued up Fuller House for us. We sang, we smirked (and now she joins in the smirking even though she doesn't know the extent of Danny Tanner's filth) and we all watched and loved it. Yeah, it's cheesy as hell, but it's one of the bonding elements of Casa Narm. We know it's kinda lame but it's also kinda awesome. Have Mercy!

Episode 5 ended on quite a powerful note. Kudos to Jodie Sweetin and CCB.

Full(er heh!) disclosure, I hated original run Full House. HAAAAAAATED it! I was in college when it was first on and had a roommate who loved it LOOOOOVED it and insisted we watch it every week. I forced her to watch the Simpsons, which she hated, so it was all good in that respect. But I still had to stew in my own white hot rage against the mullets, unfunny jokes and forced glurge once a week during my freshman- through sophomore years (but junior year I had a different roommate- so that was all good too) There was only ONE moment in that first early viewing that I enjoyed- and actually really enjoyed. But I will say more on that later.
In later years, Full House would sometimes be the syndicated show that was on when I was waiting for something else to come on and so I Hate-Watched many a tail end Full House episode. Somehow along the way, I feel like I've absorbed bits and pieces of probably the whole series run, because I feel like I know an awful lot about this series that I actively hated for many years. I mean, I know DJ's big time boyfriend was Steve and that Kimmy Gibbler was the Urkel of the group- but probably the best thing about the show. I know Uncle Jesse married Aunt Becky and they lived in the attic. And Uncle Joey and his weird puppet lived in the basement. And sometimes they would find a way for both Olsen twins to be on screen at the same time (Michelle talked to 'herself' at least a couple time that I remember) I got to actively hate the show less, but I never actually grew to like it.
But this damn reboot actually piqued my curiosity for some reason. I have a love of symmetry in art and stories that come Full (even Fuller) circle. And the set up widowed DJ raising three boys with the help of her sister and childhood friend struck me as more brilliant than corny. Who knew they were inadvertently setting up the perfect counterparts for the three adult males when they set up the DJ, Stephanie, Kimmy dynamic all those years ago. But by golly it works, it creepily works- except it's Kimmy who winds up in the attic and Stephanie in the basement.
I stuck this sucker in my Netflix queue and this past weekend watched the first episode. Which was BAAAAADDD! OMG it sucked so bad! I was straight back in college stewing in white hot rage over the sheer corniness and glurge only now with less mullet action. But even so, I kept it on as background noise as I went about doing laundry and dishes and litter box scoopings and such. And lo and behold, around the third episode or so I think, I actually got interested. Actually stopped and watched the screen. The girls went to a nightclub and I actually wanted to know how the evening would pan out for them. And there was a moment which made me honest to goodness laugh out loud! I don't believe I have ever been able to say that about a single moment in the history of Full House. But I laughed out loud and got sucked in and you know what...
I enjoyed the Hell out of the rest of the series! Actually ENJOYED it! It's still pretty cheesy, but it acknowledges it's cheese- not only winks at it, but full on turns straight to the camera and nods that yes, this is pure processed cheese! And even though it's cheap and bad, it's also kinda delicious, isn't it?
And then they got me completely by not only flashing back to the ONLY original moment I actually truly loved and had any nostalgia for (Stephanie's backyard 'wedding') but bringing that bit full circle and giving closure between Stephanie and her 'husband'. There was a ton of fan service and call backs for the folks who loved the original- so that was almost like, well hot damn, they got me too! But on top of the fan service and call backs, there was also tons of in-jokes, nods to the Olsen twins and even Alanis Morissette (yeah they went there!)
So I was impressed. Impressed and entertained. Something I never dreamed I would say about anything Full House related.
Really, the only moments that bugged were when Uncle Joey was back in the mix with his horrible impressions and damn creepy puppet friend. Ok, the wood chuck likes wood! We get it! It's not even a little funny! And neither is 'Cut! It! Out!' That's not even in the same universe as funny! Why? Seriously why, people!?!? White hot rage rising! Rising! RISING!! What were you thinking Alanis Morissette? I wouldn't want to be seen seated next to that guy in a theater let alone... well... you outta know... Seriously NOT!FUNNY!!!
(Erm, but the Joey-free moments were great!)
