I wonder if the owners are gearing up to sell it and jettisoning the less profitable bits? I'm bummed about this, as I have the app and use it just about every damn day to access their message boards.

Same here. Wikipedia is nice and all, but they never have the entire cast and crew credits. IMDB is the only site I know of that has comprehensive information like that.

And I think they'll survive just fine without the boards. I've been using IMDB for over 20 years now (back before message boards were really a thing) and I don't think they had them back then.

I hope it doesn't die...I don't think it will. I work in production and people often ask for my page instead of a traditional resume.

I can't imagine they would sell it. Especially since Jeff Bezos is really trying to build the streaming video service arm of Amazon. IMDB seems like a great way to funnel traffic directly to the streaming service.

I'm really bummed about them ending the message boards, to the point of signing the petition. That board was filled with some crazy trolls but it was also a great place to go for additional information about shows and movies. Especially if there was something you didn't totally understand or just to get more information in general. I really hope they reconsider.

I never had any problem with trolls. Of course, I ended up with over 100 people in my ignore list.

So I tried one of the alternative boards, IMDB2, tried to register only to get a "You've been banned from this forum" message when I tried to look at a post. How could I be banned? I've never even posted.

It's kind of a garbagey hodge-podge of a forum. You're not missing a thing.
