Series starts on HBO next Sunday, based on best selling book by Liane Moriarty. I read her other bestseller, The Husband's Secret, but haven't read this one. I think I'll wait until, after the series - which I think is five parts - so I can remain unspoiled.
Great cast - Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Shailene Woodley, Laura Dern.
Anyone read the book? Is the casting good? Is it a compelling story?

I read the book and really enjoyed it. The casting seems spot-on to me. They've changed to location from Sydney to Monterey, but I'm not mad about it, as it's not like the where is important to the story.
I've actually read all Liane Moriarty's books (save the most recent one) and she's definitely got a flare for setting up a good mystery/story and adding in lots of humor.

I have become a sucker for HBO series (mainly because I don't have cable and pay for standalone HBO Now), but I have no desire to watch this. Maybe I'll change my mind but it looks like a drama about the sexual drama of rich white ladies in California and that's something I have no problem taking a pass on.

Loved the book. All of her books, actually. And the casting seems perfect to me. Can't wait for it!

I did. I liked it, but I think because I read and really enjoyed the book, it's a bit harder for me to love it, as I know the whole plot. I did appreciate the performances, though. Reese was especially good and I look forward to more of Nicole's character arc, as she's got some juicy stuff coming up. The house porn is amazing. Vulture did a quick slideshow on it and I'm still transfixed: link

Coming here to eat my words. Tom and Lorenzo gushed over this (especially the costuming and the real estate porn), so I most likely will watch. They have pointed me toward plenty of things I ended up really enjoying. I have to say, though, the initial round of previews were much more annoying than the ones they put out in the last couple of weeks.

I thought it was good too - and perfectly cast. At least on the over-40 crowd. Woodley was just okay to me (though not at all terrible) and we didn't see enough of Zoe Kravitz in the first ep for me to really take a measure of her. But Reese, Nicole and Laura Dern were unbelievably perfect in their roles. They made me want to see more.
And yes - the scenery and real estate is to die for. I would happily live in Jane's shack if I got to drive past all that every day.

I watched last night and loved it. Haven't read the book. Really great casting and performances. Also yes to real estate porn & nature porn. Even my husband was transfixed. Laura Dern is great.

Loved the book and as always, had low expectations for a screen version, but I really liked it and liked the casting a lot. Ha, my bf was roped in too, which really surprised me. We might actually have a currently running, non-reality-tv show that we BOTH look forward to each week, this is new territory!

Reese's Madeline is quite the piece of work. She reminds of a Republican who will make up their. Ind about something and never be swayed. In this case, Madeline thinks Shailene is good and Laura Dern is bad (sorry, can't remember the character names). But you just know that in different circumstances, she would be just as Mama Bear if Shailene somehow crossed her.
It's not really about true friendship and character and integrity; it seems more about who Madeline decides is on her side. I haven't read the book yet, so maybe I'll eat my words.
